ILuvAmstaffs
Has anyone tried this? I usually feed Diesel human grade meat but saw this in Woolies today & thought I could mix it in with his usual mince to bulk it out a bit. Im also thinking that it contains game meats & offal that it might add some more vitamins to his diet. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with this? http://www.vippetfoods.com.au/dogfood/minc...+Pet+Mince/1kg/
Baileys mum
I also feed my dogs human grade mince & have tried them with the VIP, however my fussy dogs sniffed it & walked away. :D I ended up throwing it out .
puggy_puggy
Why don't you just buy some kangaroo from a pet produce store and offal from your butchers? Probably work out cheaper and less likey to have presevatives in it. Do you feed bones? It's important that you don't just feed muscle meat without any bones. I wouldn't be feeding offal every day. Mine get offal once a week.
Cavandra
VIP was a known company who used 220 preservative.............unless you know somehow that this has been eliminated then do not touch it!!! :D

I agree ILA... buy a brand you know is preservative free and mix it yourself I don't like VIP myself; their treats smell really odd and we had a really hard time with them when we were trying to get more specific info on the ingredients in them. They absolutely REFUSED to tell us and our Dermatologist what the magic mystery ingredients were... that's not something to inspire confidence imo!! :D :shakehead: If you were over here I'd recommend some good products... but they're local companies... ILuvAmstaffs
Thanks for the replies. I found a pet store out west that sells fresh beef mince, no preservatives & it comes from their own cows, but just don't have enough freezer space to buy the big bags of it. Puggy Pug, I feed bones as well (chicken necks, chicken carcasses, brisket bones etc) but I use the mince to mix his arthritis supps into each night. I usually give him either chicken, turkey or lamb mince (on alternate nights) and occasionally beef. I just thought this might be an option for the occassions that I use the beef, but no dramas if I have to keep using the human grade stuff. westiemum
Hi ILA, Good thread and discussion - but I agree with previous posters - when you are on a good thing - stick to it. It sounds to me like your dogs have a great diet. Nothing but human grade for my guys - haven't found a 'petfood' - wet or dry - that I'm prepared to trust yet - except the Barf patties - which they don't get every day. So they have a very varied raw/prey diet which overall I'm confident they get all their vitamins and nutrients from - Chicken necks as their morning snack then at night for a main meal they get offal, chicken frames, RMBs, fish (home brand mackeral or sardines), and cheap chewy meat on special, lamb off-cuts and barf patties - all roughly once (sometimes twice) a week - bulked out with some veggies and the occasional carrot for a treat. I think overall its not a lot more expensive and I save a fortune on vet bills - I can't remember the last time either of them were at the vet - at least 6 months ago I reckon. Feeding this way takes a little more effort than just opening a packet - but I think its worth it - my guys are happy, healthy and at ages 7 and almost 9 are bouncing around like puppies. And if any company won't be transparent about what they use in their products then I'd stay right away from them - what are they hiding? I think its important to know and understand exactly what we feed our doggies - the same as people are fussy about what they feed themselves and their kids (or they should be! ). I used VIP kangaroo years ago for my pussy cats before I knew any better - and really regret it - in hindsight I think I was feeding them a really poor quality diet as it had a really funny smell and seemed to have a bluey green dye through it - yet I stupidly didn't think anything of it at the time - now I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. And I now wonder if there was a connection with their poorer health in their old age.... Thanks for starting the thread - hope that helps. Cheers, Westiemum Thanks for the replies. I wish I had space to get a seperate big freezer so that I could stock up in bulk on all the dog food.
shoemonster
puggy puggy, we have a freezer in the laundry for the dog meat, but in our old place which was smaller we had it in the garage, you could probably even have it outside if it was undercover I couldnt do without the extra freezer now, even comes in great for bulk human meat shops too! Alison
I couldnt do without the extra freezer now, even comes in great for bulk human meat shops too! You have room for human meat in yours? I get the tiny little basket in my deep freeze and that's it, the rest is dog food Couldn't go back to paying full price ever again though, buying in bulk pays for the freezer in no time.
