My Puppy Likes Potatoes...

I was trying to find where my Daisy had hidden her Kong today, and was surprised to find a very hole filled potato under the couch! She quickly owned up to it being hers when she took it while I was looking under the other couch. Is my puppy the only one who likes to hide the strange things she steals?

Yes I've had a potato go walk about too :D And the other night Ingrid came into bed with something in her mouth. It was a cake of soap. Mind you she is 6 years old so well past the puppy stage!

Yes, I've got a thief at home as well. Rosie has one of those carry crates with windows that makes private little den - & if I'm missing something, like a sock, slipper or my son's teddy, I first check the crate.

My two young pups are shockers. There favourite thing at the moment is the roots of plants. Yep you guessed it, they go around pulling them out of the garden and proceed to chew on them  They have also pulled some interesting root veges out of the veg garden :shhh:

Puppies are strange sometimes aren't they?

At the minute mine has a thing for the split logs we store behind our garage - he drags them back to the house to chew on them. Which isn't all bad, at least I don't need to trek up the yard to get more wood for the fire :shhh:

As for other naughty things he does? Well! He has an annoying habbit of launching himself at his mattress (canvas covered foam) and 'riding' it as far as it will slide, then drags it at high speeds up and down the driveway - not the best noise to hear at 10pm every night

Be very careful with potatoes. I threw some old potatoes out into the compost, and 2 of my dogs broke into the compost & ate them, we are unsure actually how much they ate. Both dogs were very sick with poisoning type symptoms. We rushed them to the vets and they both threw up heaps and were shaking, couldn't stand, however once out of their system they were fine! We think they must have eaten quite a bit though, but still watch out with the dreaded potato!

a decent majority of the GDV (bloat) surgeries I nurse, potatoes are found to be causing the problem so I would suggest not to give them to your dogs (or let them have them if they steal it :cheer: ), cooked or uncooked as they take a long time to digest and get caught up in there as a dogs digestive system is not capable of breaking it down enough before it enters the intestines hence the bloat. I once saw a nice looking stew with cooked potatoes coming out of a dogs enlarged gassy stomach, turned me off stew for a while! :cheer:

Potatoes are the same family as tomatoes...... & deadly nightshade! This is why ingesting considerable amounts results in poisoning. I would also keep the fire wood away from puppies/dogs, most dogs enjoy chomping on wood & sticks, & some end up at the vet surgery with splinters embedded in their mouth parts & digestive tract!
