How Do I Prevent Accidents At Night ....

Recommended Posts

my puppy (almost 12 months old) is still having toilet training issues. she is pretty

good, in the fact that she will stand at the door if she wants to go outside. the only

problem is that she sleeps inside, and during the night sometimes if she needs to do a

poo (and sometimes a wee), then she will just go somewhere on the tiles in the lounge

room or hallway etc

she wont make a sound and "ask" to be let outside, so i usually wake up at least once a

week to find a nice surprise on the tiles waiting for me

I have never punished her for going inside, and she regularly gets a treat if she goes

outside while I'm watching her. I have tried changing her meal time from night-time to

morning-time, but this doesn't really make a difference.

Has anyone got any ideas for how I can achieve the following:

1) Alter her eating habits so she doesn't have the urge to go to the toilet at night

time (while I am sleeping)

2) Train her to "ask" to go outside if she needs to go to the toilet. I would rather

wake up and let her out if she needs it than wake up to find a smelly poo etc

I look forward to hearing from someone :) Thank you

have you checked for a medical reason? most dogs at 12 months should be able to hold on for about 6-8hours.

you could try crate training her and letting her sleep in the crate at night. few dogs will mess where they sleep. you could then wake up and take her out to go to the toilet.

another method is to "queue" her toileting. when you take her out to the toilet during the day have a command ie: wees etc. when she starts to do her business say the command and reward her for it, continue this at night as well. this can also be done if you crate train her as well. you need to make a big deal of the reward and praise so she gets it.

changing your dogs eating time will not necessarily make any difference to toileting at night, instead make sure she goes to the toilet before you put her to bed. you may need to wait a while and be patient but it will help.

one way to get your dog to tell you she needs to go is to have a bell attached to the door she would normally go out. have it at about chest height, when you open the door for her the bell will ring. with consistency your dog will understand the bell ringing means the door will open and she can go outside. she will in time ring the bell to alert you she wants to go out.

good luck :)
