Kyra Posted July 2, 2008 Share Posted July 2, 2008 Hey everyone When I eventually get my GSD i'd love to get into some kind of dog sport with him/her.. just wanted some suggestions on some good fun sports that both you and your dog seem to enjoy which are also suitable for GSD's, also if you're in Perth, where abouts do you go? dogdude Posted July 2, 2008 Share Posted July 2, 2008 Unfortunately no Schutz clubs in W.A, but there are a number of other sports you can get into, and most are suitable for all breeds. There are quite a number of top obedience and agility competitors over there. Best person to ask would be Ptolomy. If you are really keen on dog sports, I would be looking at a working line GSD. As long as they have a job to do and their mind and body are stimulated they will be happy. I think the trick is to try one sport and find what they really enjoy before going onto the next. Sorry can't help with any ideas in WA but I'm sure there will be people from your area able to help you. I've contacted a few breeders and stated what i'm after etc but only a couple have got back to me.. and one was only to say their last pup was sold last week I'd really prefer to get a pup from a breeder in WA.. it's proving to be quite difficult though. Kavik Posted July 3, 2008 Share Posted July 3, 2008 (edited) You'd be fine with an older dog You can only do foundation work and puppy stuff with a puppy anyway (obedience, recalls etc) - nothing serious for agility til 12-18mths. If you are careful about exactly what you get, it could work out very well. Desmo came to me at 2 years 2 months old and we are looking at joining up for Schutzhund training - plus ANKC obedience and tracking trialling when we get to that level. When we got Ebony as a puppy we did very little (I was clueless and MrsD was not well enough and also Ebony nearly died from a tick as a young pup). I started obedience with her at about 2 years old, started herding at 3 and doggy dancing at about 4. The only thing I wish I had done as a pup was more playing (tug toys, balls etc.) because she really has no drive for those things. As others have said, you can do almost anything with a good GSD.Obedience Agility Tracking Endurance Herding Flyball Lure coursing Schutzhund Conformation showing We do: obedience - though we have not competed in anything yet Agility - thinking about it - maybe later this year Tracking - no Endurance - I started training last year - maybe next year I will do enough Herding - we have our HIC and HT passes. She is not a natural - does not work like the border collies and kelpies - but I reckon we could get PT if we put some work in Flyball - have not tried Lure coursing - we tried once - she watched the lure shoot past, looked at me, then trotted back to the paddock gate and sat down. Schtzhund - no Conformation - she is from good lines, but you would not know to look at her and showing does not interest me in the slightest Also, not on the list above: Frisbee - she is simply not interested Dancing - we are working on this - I got sucked in to saying I would enter a competition later this year Cheers, DagBoy PS. the trouble with so many sports available is that there is never enough time to do them all (or even several of them) properly, so best to try a few and find the ones that you and the dog enjoy the most Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
