New 9 Week Old Pup Guidance Needed

Hi I got a new rhodesian ridgeback puppy at nearly 7 weeks old, I have bed her down in my garage (2 car but long ways) and she has been great. she doesnt cry over night etc, but as we have the whole run of the garage, she is currently peeing and pooing where ever.

I take her out as often as I can when I am home, but she is not going as much anymore now as she knows she can go in the comfort in her own time in the garage!

Should i confine her space down in there? and put paper down? (as the concrete isnt that easy to clean) i do have a kennel in there for her and she loves that now!

She will be an inside dog for a little while, especially while so young, and its freezing outside down here (Tasmania) AND my flat mate has a husky pup (6 months) which is not very well trained at all, so I keep pup inside (I have a big house!) but i walk her out onto my deck, and onto the grass, which she is cool with doing, but she doesnt go to the toilet much outside as she seems to wait until she is inside!

Any idea's, just want to make sure I train her early!

HI,

personally i would not give her the run of the whole garage whilst you are trying to toilet train her.

Is there anyway you can get a crate and have that inside with you at night?

Especially since it is so cold down there?

As a rule of thumb during the day if she is inside she should be taken out to the toilet every half and hour or so.

EWHen she wakes, after she eats adn after she has had a small play.

Give her a command that you use every time she toilets and praise her when she does go for you.

Good luck

Thanks I thought about the crate, but wouldnt she then get used to sleeping inside all the time etc?? as in long term she will be outside.

I am at work during the day so unable to take her out until I come home at lunch, she seems to be able to hold on really well, 7 hours one night when she stayed in my friends laundry!!

I do take her out a lot more when I am with her, and we do have a word, and she seems to know it, its just that she doesnt seem to need to go that often, and when she does she waits till I have gone etc!!

It depends on how you train her.

If the crate is her bed then she will get used to that and be hapopy wherever that is.

You have said how cold it is in Tassie and ridgies don't have a big coat, maybe she would be better off inside?

Oh well.

I would start her off in side or at least in a smaller enclosed area so that she cannot make a mess.

The more she does it the more she will get used to it.

When you are at work during the day is she outside or in teh garage?

If in the garage can you set up a run in the yard so that she can toilet on the grass but have shelter in the garage?

WHen my guys are pups i would say the work till they went then bring them inside. Most if not all the time this worked.

Look for signs she needs to go when she is inside, sniffing, circling etc

I dont have a crate, but do have a kennel which i spose could somehow put a front on it, in the garage she is inside (its internal to the house) but in that meaning its no where near the yard. I am unable to put her in the yard at the moment while the husky is there, and its not near the garage.

Its a lot of time isnt it to have her in the crate if I crate train her? or do u only crate train her over night, then do something else during the day?

over night she is pretty good its more during the day while I am at work that she goes all over the garage

I would not be putting a front on the kennel.

As PP suggested can you get a puppy pen and set it up so that her kennel is in there and she has an area to toilet?

Is there a reason that you can't nake her an area in the yard so that the husky cannot get to her?

Dont crate her all day

I crate mine from bed time about 11pm until 7am.

On weekends they choose to stay in their crates until much later

They like a sleep in like me.

As she is still little i would take her to the toilet once or twice a night for a couple of weeks.
