4 Paws
hi,I'm just contemplating purchasing some Kiltix collars for my dogs for tick prevention as applying advantix every 2 weeks to 2 large dogs and a small one is working out rather costly. Does anyone who has used them have any opinions on them?Do they work as well as Advantix, are they smelly and do many dogs have a reaction to them? Pulilover
Hi 4 Paws, I would highly recommend Kiltix from personal experience. When we used to live at our old address we were in a high tick area in Sydney. Many years ago I did not use any tick protection, as I thought it was too expensive at the time. I would thoroughly physically examine my dogs - golden retrievers - twice a day for ticks. I would pluck between 3 and 10 ticks off each dog every day. This worked for a couple of years until one of them went down with a paralysis tick. I had pulled ticks the night before and she was showing signs the next day. I used Kiltix tick collars after this incident and for 2 years of living there, never had to pluck another tick from my dogs. Definitely works. Have never tried any other brand. sheree_e4
If you end up using one change them every 6 weeks and remove if they go for a swim ,also if your dogs swim they will have no protection after swimming for around 2-3 days. They are a bit smelly and personally I would prefer preventic collars.
benny123
From memory they were excellent for tick control (provided they don't get wet) but you'll need a peg for your nose - they stink. I used them on my previous dog, Benny, in conjunction with Proban tablets after he almost died from a tick. I've not used them with Spud and Beanie as they wrestle too much and bite each other on the neck in play.
frufru
Have used both brands over many years very successfully - and I live in a high risk paralysis tick area. I must be weird as the smell didn't bother me. Edited June 29, 2008 by frufru
KOE
they are excellent but change them more often if in a paralyis tick area and if they get wet you need to change them. They smell a bit at the beginning but you soon get used to it. Out here where we can get scrub and cattle tick they work a lot better than preventatic. Greytmate
I don't mind the smell. I was pulling off about three ticks a day from our dogs earlier this year until I put the Kiltix collars on them. After that, I only pulled one off, and it was dead.

The smell goes away after a while. Definitely watch after a swim. Killtix does fleas as well and are water resistant. Preventatic does not do fleas and are not water resistant. I am glad so many people find them as effective as I do. Some vet places do not stock them over our way, and will only sell the spot-on treatments. At Mona Vale the discount pharmacy sells them for around $12 per collar, very reasonable. When Maxi has been wearing them for a while, a red area develops on his neck, maybe from moisture underneath, I don't know.
