Sneezing

Recommended Posts

So, a week ago our of our Saluki boys started doing these huge whooshing sneezes. We took him to the vet, no temperature, no discharge, and it seemed to be taking care of itself so the vet said just to watch him. He stopped sneezing. Then his brother started and stopped again after a few days. Now our Affie boy has started.

I'm guessing it might be a mild infection? The bitch (who is in season) has not sneezed at all that I have noticed, but she is obviously not getting contact with the boys.

Anyone seen this kind of thing? Should I be more worried? I'm in the Canberra region if anyone is au fait with what bugs are doing the rounds at the moment.

In that case, are you sure it's not an allergy?

I've known dogs to sneeze as a mild allergic reaction to dog shampoo, plants in the yard, even the detergent we wash our own clothes in - they're not sneezing at any particular time / after doing anything particular? You haven't changed brands of cleaning products or got new plants or moved house?

Good luck, I hope you get to the bottom of it

Slightly O/T: My Akita sneezes whenever she's over-excited, it used to worry me until I learned it's actually a breed quirk - you can even buy stickers saying "Akita: I sneeze on you because I love you" hahaha  x

Actually maybe it's not OT! The only thing that has changed is the bitch being in season and two of them are definitely very overexcited about the whole thing. All my cleaning products are exactly the same as they've always been, no new plants, etc etc

Hmmm perhaps it is just from over excitement then?

I know it happens but I wish I knew more about why and how over excitement can cause sneezing in certain breeds! If anyone replies to this thread and explains I'd be thrilled! x

The obvious would be an inhalant allergy, but this time of year in Canberra it isnt likely to be a natural inhalant like a pollen.

Dogs can get upper respiratory infections in varying degrees, but of course another Virus that presents as upper respiratory & does have sneezing is Canine Herpes Virus......

Thanks for the heads up, I've just been doing some Googling. That's quite scary if that is what it is but it is presenting more like an infection than an allergy. They haven't socialised with any other dogs in the last two weeks but perhaps one of them snuffled the wrong thing at the Yass Show last weekend and brought it home.

Fortunately I'm not planning to breed this bitch so I hope I don't need to freak out too much. She's only entire because GAs are highly risky for her and the vet has recommended against spaying for this reason. If I could spay her, lord knows I would. Will call the vet tomorrow for a chat.

Hi Anita

Sounds like more fun than a barrel of monkeys over at your place - AND you hurt your ankle, how is that going?

Question: does your Saluki bitch have a pre-existing condition that rules out GA? Because if it is that 'breed sensitivity' thing, then nowadays they gas them down and spey. They did Miffy (despite her being "very underweight", yes I told them she had just come from a show kennel and that is showing weight for you, oh no, tsk!) and she went home in the afternoon with no problems at all.

Was at the Dog Club today and looked in vain for Salukis or Afghans....

Is there not an implant for girls now, like there is for boys, which stops them coming in season? Might be just what you need

Might be just as well we weren't there if they do have an infection of some kind. If that is what it is I would hate to pass it on. I shall see what the vet says. If they have the all clear next weekend perhaps we can meet up then?

Lucy does have a pre-existing condition yes, our vet is really great with sighthound anaesthesia.

As for the ankle, it is steadily getting better thank god and I don't need the crutches anymore. I swear, if we can survive the last month, we can survive damn near anything. I'd say I'm looking forward to things calming down, but I probably shouldn't tempt the fates.

Could be part of KC.

Picked a boy up from the pound and had him at my place for a few hours. A week and a half later the pups, I have, got the sneezes with only a little bit of clear snot and my girl got the sneezes and a snotty nose.
