MrsD Posted June 19, 2008 Share Posted June 19, 2008 On Sunday I told my instructor I was going to teach Jarrah to do a backwards weave (ie I walk backwards & he weaves backwards between my legs). BigDaz Posted June 20, 2008 Share Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) When I was a kid and let our dog roam the streets (wouldn't do it now obviously) it was pouring with rain one night. We were all out for the night so my dog walked around to my mum's friends upstairs flat, scratched on the door, when she opened the door he walked in jumped on the couch and fell asleep. In the morning she opened the door and he came home. The distance was only about 1km but it was quite tricky to get to with 4 or 5 turns and he had only been there once in the car. Luckily there were no major roads to cross although he would probably have been OK as he used to look both ways before crossing the road. He had no idea what sit or drop meant, but he had street smarts. Edit: My two current girls are Staffy's, they amaze me, but rarely for their obedience. HE isnt a problem, he can howl all he likes and I wouldnt care about HIM. The problem is that SHE wants to go back to him to rescue him form his distress, and looses concentration on what she supposed to be doing. While we were waiting our turn I noticed we were next to the table which wasn't being used in our sequence, so I thought I'd start teaching him the table (haven't done it before ever). So I told him table, up he hopped, and then I got him to drop, then release. He learned paw-targeting in ONE click&treat and most other tricks/commands followed the same speed of picking it up. He learned high-5, high-10 and wave in a matter of minutes... He has continued to astound me with his ability to pick stuff up! Nothing too flash, but he certainly has a fair few tricks under his belt and he's only 14 weeks old (about 20 commands now??). I have been a little slack with teaching him new tricks lately because of uni exams, but I have 3 weeks holiday as of Friday, so we will be working on some new stuff! MonElite Posted June 23, 2008 Author Share Posted June 23, 2008 (edited) Uta (judge from the SchNationals I attended) was in Sydney today and visited where we train, I told her that I got motivated to do more of a clicker and that since the seminar last week I tought Divani to bring the dumbell and that today she has even done it over the jump. Uta asked me 3 times if Divani has done this before than asked for a demo and was seriously impressed She said it was brilliant for a weeks or so worth of scattered training. It only confirms that my dog is a genious Oh and for she said that the heeling we do can be really pretty if I work on it more. Showed me some tips, now I just have to do it all...........
