New Doggy Soon!

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Myself and hubby are looking at getting a new doggie (to add to our border collie cross terrier). We've decided that we would love to have a Great Dane (we live on a farm), and I have been researching about them that they cannot be excercised much in the first 12 months of life and that you need to use a rubber mit to increase their blood supply to their skin.

Is there anything else? Like how often should you feed such a large dog (ie. brekky lunch and dinner) or the same as our current dog (2 small meals and plenty of fresh chicken)???

Also, what is the best type of dry nibbles for a medium sized dog? Eukanaba?

If you know of any Great Dane breeders in the Melbourne area, please hook me up with an email addy!!

Thanks so much,

Very Excited About My New Doggie!

You could try the breed specific forums. The great dane owners in there will be able to give you a run down on what to expect and may even be able to direct you to some fantastic breeders.

As for the kibble - the question of what is the best is a loaded one! Everyone will swear by something.

I go by the saying "whatever your dog does best on" - I feed pedigree naturals because my dog has an allergy to many foods and gets sick from them, aside from supercoat (which makes him poop a lot more) and pedigree naturals. I'll be trying orijen and eagle pack in the next couple of days because they're supposed to be good quality foods and i'll see how he goes.

ETA: congrats on the decision btw - baby danes are very very cute!!!

Come into the dane thread and ask all the questions you want! We have a couple of melb. based members who will help with breeder names - a lot turns on the colour you are after.

You live on a farm? Useless for a dane! They are very lazy dogs and prefer the bed!

Have not heard the mitt thingy.

Food - food is critical with a dane because of controlling growth and also because of bloat - lots of do's and don'ts.

A dane is not a medium sized dog (re kibble question!)
