Playing Chasie Leading To Problems?

My 7 year old son & 11 week old puppy play chasie very often - around the house, around the yard & on the way to school. We walk to school with 2 other children & the children love running & the puppy loves chasing after them. I heve the puppy on lead & run with her.

Is this going to create problems for the future? I'm thinking - teaching Rosie to heel & walk nicely on the lead. She is due for her 2nd vaccination in a week & we'll start taking her to parks then.

I'd appreciate advice from people more experienced then myself.

Hi...

It's great that your pup is so socialised already, but there is a down side :p

Walking to school with such a young puppy may be a bit risky, for a start... she isn't protected yet by her vaccines.. not until a couple of weeks after her final ones, at around 16 weeks .

Dogs still wander along footpaths, and urinate/defecate there, so the chance of picking up disease is there :p

Running on lead is ok, providing she also knows that walking on lead is normally by your side, and not pulling.

personally , I don't recommend playing chasey... what if a child visits who is wary of dogs, and while running, the pup chases her ?

It also encourages the pup to chase kids, which may then lead to puppy play behaviours like nipping!

No doubt others will be along to explain it better :)

What breed is your pup? Any photos? :p

Ahh.... you could turn this into a fabulous training opportunity! I did! Worked well with Noodle.

Try having the pup on a longer lead and having the kids move ahead and keep pup back. Arm kids with a high value treat (we use tiny slithers of grated cheese .. don't growl at me DOLers .. that is the ONLY thing that works and doesn't give her the runs and I am adverse to wiping a Puli's butt!! ... glad I got that out .. now where was I ...) and have them practice using your pup's name or 'COME' with the appropriate hand signals .. as the pup heads in their direction YOU need to run to keep up ... the kids treat her when she gets to them ... only if your pup does not jump up .. have them come down to pup's level to prevent this happening. You will get to school fast and your pup would have learnt soemthing in the process ...

Of course listen to the advice of other DOLers re: immunisation and risks etc.

Alternatively teach the kids not to run ahead but stay slightly behind you so pup does not feel they have to 'keep up' and chase ... also use high value treat as a lure as you go along and stop and praise regularly.

Mind you there is no squealing or playing chasey around our house .. unless the kids want their heels nipped at ..... big 'turn on' for our pup (working breed - Hungarian Puli) ... we prefer fetch games and hide and seek games to chasey for this reason.

Dunno what other DOLers think of this suggestion but it worked well for us in having our pup recognise her name and the command 'COME'.

PS any excuse for a piccie .... :p

It's so difficult to take a good photo of a black dog. I hope I'll get better at it.

Noodle seems to take good photos - he's so cute.

Thanks for all the input everyone :D .

I think I better take it serioiusly & not walk with Rosie until she's 16 weeks. By then she'll lget some obedience training at home & probably in the local Kennel club.

I love the idea to use the "walks" to school for training...

She looks a very sweet pup! Puppy chasing kids is probably not a good idea. The focus becomes the kids and not you when you are walking. The excitement level increases and it is really hard to calm them down. Rosie may also start to think that this is the normal thing to do while on lead. Ideally you want a nice calm puppy so she can socialise and learn about her environment. Whilst she is excited and running around she's not observing cars, cats, other people, strange noises etc but most of all she's not paying attention to you but seeing you as another plaything. Start walking her on the lead in the backyard with no kids rewarding her for good behaviour, especially calm behaviour. If it becomes a habit to chase kids now as she gets bigger (even though she won't be a big dog) it will be harder to stop and may even become a problem.

Can you carry her?

Because she may get great benefit from seeing all that activity - by 16wks her development will be at a stage where she's much less receptive to learning how to deal with those kinds of challenges and variation in the environment. A lot happens in a pup's development in those 1st few mths, and there's not much time to waste. If you can set it up so that she is given nice things by ppl and has short, safe training sessions in these kinds of environments (doesn't need to be anything too fancy - just a few lured 'look at Mum's face, while being held' with generous rewards is fine), it will be all the better for helping her develop into a calm, sociable dogs.

Gorgeous pup btw.

Ahhhhhhh!! A TT!!!!! I love them!!! When I researched breeds for us the TT was on the list (we decided on a Puli but the TT was my number two!! I like lots of breeds but I could easily see us having a TT ... one dog is enough at the moment though. The TT has very similar features as the Puli .. different coat but tail up over the back .... stunning puppy!!

I agree balck dogs and particularly one without 'eyes' is nearly impossible to photograph ... looks like a black blob!! Becasue Noodle's nose is black I have to wait for her to start panting to have something to aim at!! The pink tongue of hers at least distinguishes the front from the back!! Caught our son patting her butt thniking it was her head the other night LOL He realised after a couple of minutes it was the wrong end.
