Which Sydney Obedience Club Would Be Best?

Recommended Posts

My almost 11 week old pup has shown great promise with obedience (

<--- was doing most of this at 9 weeks!) and I would LOVE to do trialling with him. He seems to pick things up almost immediately!!! I had him nose targeting after ONE CLICK!!!!!!! (*proud* hehe)

Anyway, I know that trialling is a completely different league to pet obedience classes and I've heard people say that they have had to 're-train' their dog because they were taught things differently or a bit sloppy in pet classes... So I guess I'm after a bit of advice as to which would be the club in Sydney for the best start with an aim to trial once he's old enough? We are in Ryde/Parramatta area, but I'll drive almost anywhere in Sydney if necessary. I know these sorts of threads must get a bit annoying, but I have never trained a dog to trialling level and never taken a dog to classes in Sydney, so I'm a little lost. We are starting puppy classes this weekend mainly for the socialisation factor, which I think go for 6 weeks...

Thanks in advance!!!

What a cute little pup!

I've been going to Western Suburbs which trains at Bressington Park, Homebush on Tuesday evenings. That is their trialling class, with pet classes on Saturdays. I've found them to be nice and helpful for those starting out in trialling, and also flexible if you want to try different things (I've gotten funny looks but nobody minded when I spit food, or try drive training etc)

May I ask if you need to do their "pet classes" first? The reason that I ask is that I have found that a lot of clubs will insist you do this and will not let you join their trialling class straight away.

No, you can go straight to the trialling class, even with a puppy.

ETA: obviously you don't do the whole class with a puppy, but you can work on specific exercises, have a break and a play etc.

The pet classes are run differently by Delta instructors, the trialling class is run by people who trial their dogs.

Fantastic! That sounds great! They are close to us, too!

Do they have 'puppy' classes at all or should I continue with my plan to take him to puppy classes and then start the trialling classes? I don't mind having to join multiple clubs!

Thanks for that. The reason that I ask was that I have been thinking about looking at trialling classes - may I ask what time on Tuesday night?
