disorder
I was on the computer just now and I heard Snot rolling around on the bed in my room. I got up to see what he was doing in there, and he was obviously doing something naughty because when he heard me coming he quickly jumped off the bed and ran passed me. I told him to stop, he turned around and I saw he had something in his mouth. I went to grab him and whatever it was he quickly gulped it down Straight after this happened, he did a big choke for a bit and then hacked a few times and was licking his lips. Ahhhhhh. I go into the bedroom to investigate what it was he has just now swallowed. And I find a hard plastic phone casing, with a considerable chunk missing from it... i guess about the size of two 50cent pieces? I don't know what to do now? He is acting normal. But he has definitely swallowed it. Will this pass through okay, or are we in for some serious trouble...? I'm just about to go to my brothers house for a roast :D Do I need to stay home and keep an eye on him? What do I do?
squeak
Not sure. If it was me, I would probably be phoning a local emergency vet and asking their advice.
tdierikx
Hmmmm... I've been in a similar situation with my Labrador when she was a pup... one TV remote open and chewed, and could only find one of the batteries... Straight to the vet we went - made her vomit - not there! X-rayed - not there either (thank god!)... was worth it for the peace of mind though. We never did find where that lost battery went either... errr! If you think that Snot may have swallowed the chunk whole, you could have a problem if it gets stuck at some point while it's trying to pass through... a very expensive problem requiring some pretty major surgery and all. If you think he may have actually broken it up into smaller bits before swallowing, you might just find some interesting things when you do the poo patrol tomorrow... *grin* Dogs do these things at the most inconvenient times, don't they... lol! persephone
If the phone casing os hard plastic..there could be sharp 'spears' where he has chewed it!! I would recommend a vet visit..this is NOT going to dissolve in a hurry... hopefully he has already vomited it up or something.... (although if he had trouble swallowing..vomiting will be very uncomfortable) Hope he's ok.
disorder
Thanks for the replies. I ended up taking him to dinner with me, and he has been fine, playing with my brother all night and ate some leftovers after dinner. I text OH a pix of the phone case, and apparently it was already broken off...so it may not have been the case he ate (or not as big a chunk as I once thought) So I really have no idea what he has swallowed, but it was definitely something. I will be watching him closely over the next few days, but for the moment he is fine. So hopefully he stays that way!
Miss B
If it were my dog I'd be off to the vet, I wouldn't take any chances.
Jed
When they eat something like that, you can make them vomit immediately - salty water helps. Oherwise, keep an eye on the dog and hope it passes through him. Unless it is something really sharp and dangerous which is likely to tear the oesophagus or the stomach. If it causes a blockage, he will probably be vomiting, not keen to eat, in some distress or pain, and straining to pass stools, without anything happening .He may initially pass stools, or have diarohhea, and then be unable to pass anything. He needs to go to the vet. If he eats anything which worries you, take him to the vet for an x-ray to see where it is. the liklihood is that he will need an operation to remove it. It's amazing what will pass through a dog. In this situation, if I thought the dog had eaten something which would not pass through, I would take him as soon as the surgery opened the next morning
