Matts Matts Matts...aarrgghh!

Recommended Posts

Hi Newnef,

I have been wondering how Turtle is getting on.

Matts..horrible job, I have found the Plush puppy OMG spray is great and helps seperate the matts (you can get in online) and also the PP seabreeze oil in the bath keeps the knots away, this stuff has cut my grooming time in half!!!. Spray OMG into the mat and comb through starting at the ends and holding the comb vertical, tease the matt out little by little . If it is very tight matting you can split the mat with sissors or thinning sissors.

Poor Turtle , I hope he had fun though. I think fun is more important than knots in coats too.

"However, I would recommend getting as many matts out as possible yourself before heading to a groomer, I doubt any groomer would put in the same amount of time an owner would put in."

Double coats does not mean knots & i would presume if you could have got the knots out yourself you wouldnt have seeked the service of a groomer in the first place.

As for a groomer putting the same amount of time in where the ones who get the job BECAUSE the owners didnt put the time in.

Getting knots out hurts like buggery & thats why the owners wont do it yet they expect there dogs to enjoy the experience

Hi ashka1!

Turtle is going great guns (well, except for the current little problem).

Thanks for your advice on the matts. I got some advice to get a Mars Coat King - have you used these before? I think it cuts out the under coat and any matting - will the under coat grow back?

Hmmm...

How's the georgous baby Bella doing???:cry::(

I have to say that I ordered a mars coat king for the cheeky boy and didnt really like what it did to his coat - yes it did remove some of the undercoat but it also seemed to cut a lot of the top coat. But that could have been the way I was using it

Try the plush puppy OMG before you try the coat king. The coat king does cut a lot of coat and frankly I dont think its really designed to be a dematter

I'd use the coat king as a las resort - we only used it because Charlie has not blown his coat and summer was getting quite uncomfortable for him. His coat has come back but whereas before it felt quite soft, it feels a little coarser now?

I agree with the other posts, Mars are great but do cut out alot of coat. Try the OMG and patience first.

Baby Bella is doing great, thanks for asking, putting it over the boys already, bossy thing she is! I can see her being a real handful. She is 15 kg and only 11 weeks today. First show entries going in the post now !!!

I don't think a Mars Coat King would do much for the matts. That's not what they are made for. A matt splitter, scissors etc would do a far better job. Coat Kings are for thinning/shortening the coat, and they will cut it, so you need the right blade for the coat. I've never tried to get matts out with mine - I don't think it would work very well (not that my dogs EVER get matts, of course  ). And if you don't own one, it's a lot of money for something which isn't going to work well.

I advise pet owners of my cavaliers to buy a coat king instead of sending the dog off for a full clip, and to use it once or twice a week to shorten and thin the coat, rather than clipping. That seems to be what they are best at doing.
