This has got me totaly confused we have a 4mth old staffy pup that has been really good untill this morning apart from the few accidents when toilet training he has never diliberatly peed or pooped inside we are even in the middle of training to poop in one spot outside also he knows that he is not alloud in the childrens bed rooms there is a line between the tile and the carpet and he never crosses it unless he is with me

to day we let him out for the normal morning pee and poop he then went to his "bed" in the lounge to watch cartoons with the kids all as normal about 10 mins later hubby heard his collar and tag rattleing in the kids bed room we went up to see and he had pooed on the floor and peed on the bed?

I just cant understand this there was no sniffing around befor hand and when he wants to go out to toilet he sits at the back door and scratches he didnt even do that.

Hubby is pissed and has now demanded that our inside dog remains outside from now on

how do i get back to the happy arrangment we had befor do i have to compleatly retrain? im so upset that this has happened and i dont know what to do next

thanks guys Sera

I'm no expert, but maybe puppy is deciding to try to climb up the pack superiority ladder? Was it your youngest child's room by any chance?

Hubby also needs to retrained if he thinks that this one incident from a 4 month old puppy requires that he now be an outside dog...

I agree! pup is still a baby.. and still learning his place in the world. Sounds as if he is doing VERY well so far, too :)

pup needs to be taken back to the basics for a while..in Toilet training.

CLOSE the door to the kid's room so pup CANNOT make a 'mistake'

start doing the triangle of temptation exercise here

Hubby needs to understand that babies make mistakes. Did he never have an accident when he was being toilet trained? If one accident banishes your otherwise well behaved dog outside, it's a pretty sad state of affairs. I'll bet he wasn't the one who had to clean it up either. :)

I agree, keep the door closed. Dogs will sometimes urinate or defecate to mark territory so that might be the cause.

But gee, I'd be having some pretty free and frank discussion about where your dog fits in your family life. How many hours daily interaction with your family will this pup have if it now lives outside?

You also need to consider what happens to puppy after he's banished outside.

What happens when he starts barking?

Digging?

Tearing washing off the line?

Being over-exuberant everytime he comes into contact with people?

When all the socialisation he's undergone starts being reversed?

What's hubby going to suggest then?

He's still a baby rainy, they'll go great for a few months, weeks or days, and then all of a sudden go backwards, then forwards, and backwards again, time, perserverance and consistency, keep doing what you were previously doing, he's not naughty he's just a normal pup.

We keep all our bedroom doors closed unless supervised, but we have the odd accident now and then, I think our pups going great with her toilet training and expect her to go backwards as well, but this is exactly what we expected with owning a puppy.

I dont think you have to completely retrain, he's been great up till now, so just keep doing what your doing.

I personaly think 4 months is too young to expect 100% in the area of toilet training. Your husband needs to be re-educated. Take for example when your children were potty training, they didn't understand the whole concept within a couple of short months when they were so young did they?

A 4 month puppy in my opinion should not be let out of your sight.

I think you need to lower your standards because you said you were so unspet....it's a poo....you cleaned it up, what's the big deal when it's just a baby puppy?

Dominance? I'd be fairly confident to say not at all, not in the circumstance....puppy had an accident.

What's your husband going to do when you dog does something really bad? Send it to the pound? Puppies have accidents and do naughty things.

I'd reccomend kiddy gates on doors you don't want the dog to go into, I still have them now and my dogs are adults, just habbit I guess.

Here is my opinion:

Don't take the behaviour too seriously, nor too lightly either. See what happens over the coming few months whilst continuing the normal toileting regime. We need to give the pup the benefit of the doubt in this instance, but watch him like a hawk. 4 months is still very young.

Relegating him to life outdoors is not only a useless approach, it will not provide you with the necessary clues/answers if he is doing this due to rank.

ETA, dogs are never "naughty". This is a human trait and calling him such is termed as anthropomorphism. Dogs will only do things they believe to be necessary to their existence...nothing more, nothing less.

Well said.

I also like the way Jean Donaldson (The Culture Clash) puts it. To paraphrase: Dogs don't know right and wrong. They only know safe and dangerous.

How do you describe a poodle who nicks your ugh boot, pisses off through the dog door with it and then wants to play chaseys round the back yard??

I recall the same dog being chased around Young show ground with a friend's sandal as a little tacker. :)

I wouldn't say that he's being naughty or dominant. The puppy is only four months old and not fully trained yet, puppies this young shouldn't be allowed free access to all parts of the house, crate him or put him in a puppy pen when you can't supervise.

I think your husband is over reacting.

Is it possible that something upset him? Perhaps a low frequency noise that you couldn't hear? I saw another post recently about a little. I think it was a Staffy, that suddenly started behaving crazily and they were near some military base.

It is in any case hardly your husband's place to be 'demanding' anything. Tell him he should obey you as you know what is best for him.

I have a poodle with seperation anxiety... If we go out she would destroy her bed then jump on ours and pee on it... as a puppy she used to pee on her bed... It was a comfort thing to make things smell like her to make her more comfortable and relaxed while i was gone... Wehn i go out i lock up her be and her brothers, shut all bedroom doors and give them a pigs ear. Usually if im home there isnt a problem but there was when she was your staffys age.... They are babies and are still learning the ropes.. if he hasnt done it befoere thenhe wouldnt really know it was a negative behavious... My poodl is 18months old though and she'll still do it :cooldance:
