Eza
My brothers dog is 8 weeks old. I want to be able to teach him to balance something on his nose. I dont really know where to start with him. Any suggestions? What would be the best thing for him to balance? Hes a rotti.
The Spotted Devil
In all honesty (and this is simply my preference), the puppy has gone through a lot of changes recently and I would suggest that you and your brother concentrate on simple things such as puppy sitting, coming when called and toileting. Give him time, some maturity and the opportunity to have confidence in his new owner before you start trying to teach more complex behaviours - this is not to say puppies can't learn at that age! IMO there are more important things to learn than balancing food on is nose
Kavik
I have only taught balancing food on nose to adults. Then I release and they throw and catch the food in their mouth. Good to have basic behaviours down pat first Besides, you need a sit and stay and the dog not to move, that isn't going to happen with an 8 week old puppy! I would work on basic obedience first, sit, stay, recall, toilet training etc.
leopuppy04
There are basic behaviours you have to have first and I also wouldn't do it around a teething stage. Like Kavik - i've only taught it to adults The dog must understand how to wait, catch, hold, sit etc,etc....

Eza
So there is nothing I can do to start this trick? Sitting something on his nose etc. Of course hes getting basic obed aswell.
luvsdogs
Try a roll over instead. Have him sit, drop, then lure into a roll. That's what I'm doing with my puppy.
whatevah
You could start off just by teaching him to catch. Go here for instructions. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=7358
