Silverblue
Boris doesn't have the scabs on his beautiful face, just the rest of him. Treatment seems aggressive, with alot of nasty side effects. Edited May 5, 2008 by Silverblue
poodlefan
Boris doesn't have the scabs on his beautiful face, just the rest of him.Treatment seems aggressive, with alot of nasty side effects. Looks nasty Silverblue This is one condition I'd recommend a holistic vet consult for - there may be alternatives to the steroids. The one I use will do a phone consult if sent the veterinary notes. Silverblue
Thanks Poodlefan, I have mum on the job of tracking down some alternative course of action, I would be very grateful if you could PM me details of the vet you use, many thanks. Judith That's interesting, I did want to cautiously suggest a good homeopathic doctor, sometimes vets associated with the horse racing industry are also into homeopathy etc.

Judith PM Sent. I gather skin issues make up a significant part of many holistic veterinary practices. Fingers crossed for a good outcome.
Silverblue
My vet has been waiting to speak to the skin specialist just to confirm a couple of things, will find out today what path the vet wants to take, will post tonight what he has said, Thanks everyone

Silverblue
OK, Vet wants another couple of days to work out his plan of attack, he says 1 in 5 dogs are fairly easy to treat, you can bet that Boris isn't one of them. He is going to explore ALL treatments for me, if he isn't one of the easy ones to treat it is going to be a very long & costly exercise, with blood tests every 2 weeks to check his red cell count. The specialst has never seen this condition in a Cocker before & it isn't heriditary, which is one bonus I guess. I will keep this thread updated as it is such a rare condition. Silverblue
OK, just got off the phone to the vets, we are having a meeting tommorow to discuss what we are going to do, he wants to start the cortisone, but is happy to listen to the research I have done so hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement. I guess in the end we both want what is best for Boris, no matter how we achieve it. I am just soooooo bloody scared
InspectorRex
Hugs to you and Boris- you are in my thoughts The Holistic Vet in Sydney is very good as she is also a conventional Vet
Silverblue
As I said I love my vet. Went to see him today armed with all the research I had done on PF, He is happy to speak to a Chinese herb type vet to see if any of the treatments I had would work for Boris, all I had to do was tell him the names of the stuff & he is going to do the rest. Not very often would you find a vet that is happy to explore all the other avenues before starting on the heavy drugs. I do feel a bit better tonight, either way it is going to be a very costly exercise, but what do we do.

Silverblue
My wonderful vet has organised a appointment for me with the Chinese herbalist. Boris is to visit on the 2nd June, My vet certainly thinks it is worth trying before we go down the cortisone track.
Silverblue
Thought I would start a separate post for Boris, today is D day & I am very worried. This morning I noticed he is a bit weak in his back legs, "Teddy" was sitting on top of the stove ( have to take it off him otherwise he won't go outside) when he came back inside he couldn't reach up to get it. Gidget could reach it, but she didn't want the stinky thing, but Boris just couldn't jump to reach it. He has been getting a bit stiff for a while now, guess I just never really noticed it, he hasn't been able to jump on the bed for months, has to use Misty's steps, just thought he was being lazy. He is only 5, Please keep him in your thoughts today.
Silverblue
unfortuanately we haven't had very good news today & I am so bloody confused. The herbalist said he has the body of a 10 year old dog. Thinking back I now realise that these sympton have been around for about 12 months, he started getting very sluggish, wouldn't show, can't get in the car or on the bed. He has had accpuncture today to try to improve his energy levels as they were zilch, he also came home with a bottle of potion which may improve his skin. She has also said she has never seen a case of PF & isn't confident that she can cure it. So how far do you go????? I am going to talk to my vet again tommorow, I am just so confused, I really want to do the best thing for Boris but I really don't know what that is
