Can anyone recommend a really good vet in Brisbane (anywhere) for a long haired dachshund who has an itchy tummy which she has rubbed bare rubbing it on carpet? PM me if you prefer. This has apparently been going on since she was desexed. The vet in the small country town where she lives cannot find anything wrong with her despite allergy tests and thinks she may have been allergic to the sutures used. His only suggestion is to PTS which is not acceptable to her family who love her greatly.

My Gracie, a tibbie, had no history of allergies until she was desexed. The wound looked a bit inflamed & I even thought it might be getting infected.

But I got a second opinion from a vet who'd worked at the uni & it turned out to be that she was allergic to the internal sutures.

As this is an unusual situation.....I'd urge the owners to take her to the University of Qld Small Animals Clinic. And indicate strongly that the problem only started following her desexing operation.

It may be grass seeds?.. our old boy was always itchy... could it be flea's? i know if my get aflea on em ill kill it and they scratch for hours on end..

I know they were not good for dogs but our 11 year old was on little green tablets cant remeber the name for his itchyness

PM, please pass on my best wishes to the little dog's owners that all goes well.

I understand that the present vet only thinks that it could be an allergic reaction to the internal sutures.

But it was diagnosed with certainty with my Tibbie girl.

I'd never known such a thing could be possible. But the vet who diagnosed it, didn't have any trouble in doing so.

He told me that another different kind of internal suture material can be used.....which is less likely to trigger allergy in dogs vulnerable to it happening.

I mentally filed away that bit of information away for when I had to have another female dog desexed.

If the present vet can now only suggest PTS, it puts the case in the serious & unusual category. I head off to the U of Q clinic when something like that comes up with any of our pets.

Have they tried her on anti histamines? if it is an allergy they should at least give her some relief!!

With a dachsy... it could be anything..their belly is so low ;)

How long ago was she speyed?

Possibly allergic to sutures..

could have also started with clipper rash...then got worse...

could have started with the pre-op scrub (iodine? )

could have been disinfectant in kennel...

any of these.. rub tummy on carpet.... get carpet cleaner/deodoriser on tummy.... irritation/rub again......vicious cycle ;)

Hopefully they can find out what the cause is soon...poor little dog.

The vet may need a lesson in diplomacy .....

They live in a small rural town so the vet is more used to dealing with farm animals than pampered pets. They are trying to get an appointment for the university clinic next week and in the meantime she is on a small dose of antihistamines.

Mita, what happened to your girl? Where they able to fix her problems?
