Ear Cleaning

I have a 7mth golden who I have noticed has quite a bit of brown in one ear. I have neaver cleaned his ears - the pom X has always licked them clean, gross I know but he has done a good job!

Since his desexing the pom hasn't kept up with the program and I noticed yesterday one has quite a bit of brown/black in one ear. It doesn't smell offensive just a little musty.

Am I right in just getting something to clean it out with or does it need more investigation at a vet. It is not bothering him, as I said doesn't smell, he's not scratching or shaking.

Suggestions for a cleaner please (if that's the way I should go).......will pop into Petstock in Braeside on the way home.

Thanks all in advance.....

GL - told me that this stuff is great Epi-Otic Ear Cleaner for Dogs & Cats and I agree I like it - Benson not so much but hey! You know those cotton make up removal pads you can get from the shops that you pour your own cleansers onto, I use those to clean out the gunk! (the round ones)

If it get gross in a week of doing his ears that's when I would probably go to the vet.

Makes it nice and easy and you don't actually get the wax on your fingers then! :)

A damp cloth is fine to clean out the ears with.

I clean the pugs ears, whilst they are in the bath, once a week with a damp chux like cloth. If they have some wax that I can't get to with the cloth I will use a cotton bud carefully to remove it. My girl's ears really don't get dirty but my boys ears are usually a bit gunky.

As long as the gunk in your golden's ears don't seem to some sort of infection then you cleaning them will be fine. If they seem irritated, red, or he is scratching at them it would be best to go to your vets and get them to do a swab to look at under their microscope to see if there is an infection present. If that is the case they will provide you with some medicated eardrops most likely.

Haha yes I found her quite rude too, she seemed very annoyed to have to speak to customers, lol.

I got some ear cleaner the other week, think it was aristo....something brand.

I was a bit worried though as it seemed to irritate the dogs ears a bit, and i got a bit on the cut on my hand and it burnt. I was going to start a thread to see if there were any brands to steer clear of, but if it's ok with you, i'll just hijack your thread and see if anyone replies :scared:

Hi

I just posted the following in BlitznBear's thread - have used it on my old goldy Hamish when he had constant ear problems........you may find it useful, certainly cheaper

It's from another list I am on, and comes highly recommended.

After months of problems with one of Hunter's ears, it is finally

clear of amy problem.

The mixture which has worked is as follows, and is an adaption of one

posted earlier on this site, and modified with the assistance of the

chemist at Porirua Supachem who said he used to make a mixture

himself, and supply it to Vets. So he knew about dog's ears.

The mixture is inexpensive, and the ingedients are readily available

at a chemist. It cost about $11.00 for the two items.

Isopropyl alcohol (this comes in a small bottle)

Water

Betadine liquid

Mix 30% Isopropyl Alcohol and 70% water. Add a few drops of Betadine.

Use a dropper to insert into the ear. Massage and wipe out gently

with a cotton pad. Insert another lot and leave. I did this morning

and night for a week, then just the mornings for a couple of weeks,

then reduced to just one application and massage in the morning for a

week.

Hunter's ear now seems totally clear of all problems.

I had tried vinegar & water for about a month, but it only reduced

the problem, didn't cure completely.

Just be aware that Epi Otic is NOT alcohol based and therefore leaves the ear damp encouraging fungal growth. Great if you make sure you dry the ear out with a cotton ball after swishing it around but not great if you don't dry the ear deep down inside (pretty damn hard to do).

I use an alcohol based each and every week, just squirt it in and leave it, drys out beautifully and no problems.

Artyfarty's recipe is excellent.

Can anyone tell us if any of the ear cleaners are bad for our dogs? I am using aristopet. Like I said, it burnt my hand when i got it in a cut, but that may just be the alcohol. The dogs really don't like it though.

Ingredients are:

Propylene Glycol <40%

Benzoic Acid <0.2%

Malic Acid <3%

Salicylic Acid <0.04%

Isopropyl Alcohol <35%

Polysorbate Emulsifier <2%

Purified Water to 100%

Any ideas? I don't want to hijack this thead, but it doesn't make sense to start another :D

I use the Malaseb dilute :D

Clyde is that an alcohol based one??

It's just Malaseb shampoo mixed with 30 parts water to one part Malaseb. It's for yeast infections but fab as just a regular cleaner as it dries out the ear, plus no alcohol so no stinging
