LilBailey
This is about my cat not a dog but the idea is similar. It is recomended that I out my boy on CD Diet but I just canot afford it. I know that CD is great but before CD what did peopel do? I have been given a recipie from the vet to use it is simple enough but just wondering what people did befpre the CD diet came on the market. Oh and I have posted this in the CAT thread as well.
lucknow
Well we just used to chuck 'em on Acidurin which was a nuisance for owners having to give daily medication. If you are going to try a home diet make sure you encourage lots of drinking to lower urine concentration. Hills should not be expensive if it is only fed to one cat, I generally find 1 bag (approx $20) lasts me 4-5 weeks depending on the cat.
oakway
It's not expensive, and comes in dry and wet.
LilBailey
I have 3 cats and NO way of feeding them seperate. I also have 5 dogs that eat Euk, one that looks like he will need a special diet as well. Also in past experiance with this particular kitty he cant seem to stomach dry food very well or tined cat food as it gives him the runs. Dry dog food has been ok as well as Raw meat like he is on ATM.
Staff'n'Toller
Have you tried the CD cans? They are not supermarket quality mush so I'd be surprised if it gave him the runs. What brand of dry do you feed now? You can just feed it to one cat, but you'll need to change your feeding regime, unfortunately they may need to be trained to go from grazing cats to 'eat when your plates put down' cats but it is do-able. My friend has 4 cats and one on kidney diet. I imagine it will cost you a lot more in hospitalisation and treatment if he keeps getting a blocked ureter. What people don't realise is that as soon as there is overload of toxins in the kidneys caused by not being able to pee- bang your cat's dead, hence the reason why they need to be on IV fluids for a few days at a time. Mel. ETA: Perhaps it might be worth looking into the Royal Canin Neutered Male formula- it's Vet only but not prescription so it may just keep the crystals at a low enough level. LilBailey
There not grazing cats. Far from it. The recipie I have is raw Beef mince, Liver, cooked Rice, Calcuim powder, Water, and Salt. It is easy they like it and we'll see how he gos. I will get him checked out by the vet again and if he is fine I will continue on. If not I will have to go onto the CD or the Hills one. About how much would I need to feed one medium sized cat?
rose of tralee
In the 70s , Caspar, a castrated farm cat blocked. Naughty boy was very fond of dry food. He was basically fed raw (beef, horse, turkey, egg, raw milk) after that with no more dry food and had no further problems. The approx. 70% water in raw is a great help to cat urinary tract. Liver is an excellent food but I'd be wary of daily liver unless the amounts are quite small.
stormie
All the experts in this field agree that in all the studies done, the only thing that showed to be proven to make a difference was increasing the cats water intake. So simply changing the cat onto a strictly wet food only diet might make all the difference..
Embellish
I sold some c/d tins at work yesterday, they have just had a price rise , but they were $2.05 per tin, now around $2.25 per tin. I actually thought that was a good price for prescription cat food that has great results. But... I don't own any cats and have no idea what normal cat food costs!!!
