Both my lab and golden get a weekly bath useing Pyohex, it helps a little but after a couple of days they start scratching again and their coats just look so dull. We are also looking at changing thier diet to see if this helps, we currently feed them on supercoat as well as vegies and pet mince and add eggs and fish. Any suggestions for shampoo and diets? poodlefan Posted April 7, 2008 Share Posted April 7, 2008 I would recommend you try a wheat free diet for a while. Wheat is a very common allergen in dogs. They do scratch abit but it's not a constant thing and their coats are very dry and dull. Where can I find some info for a good holistic vet in VIC, prefer on my side of Melbourne. Golden Rules Posted April 7, 2008 Share Posted April 7, 2008 I know everyone is different and has different preferences but why do you bath your dogs weekly? If it's just because of the itching, I would do it less often - maybe once a month - and concentrate on their diet more. I wouldn't be surprised if your dogs coats are dry and dull because of the frequent washing. I have an itchy GR occasionally - Im pretty sure his allergy is red meats so he gets very little of that but his diet isn't void of red meat completely because I have another GR who has no allergy problems so they get whatever is going. Anyway, the Malaseb Medicated shampoo is great for itching, as is the Aloveen shampoo and conditioner but they do only seem to provide relief for a few days. Have you thought about a raw diet at all? I tend to feed a prey model diet (there is a thread here on that if you are interested, just do a search) but if you can't for whatever reason, the Eagle Pack Holistic is very good for allergy dogs. I have a friend who's Lab x Staffy has dreadful allergies and he does brilliantly on Proplan - salmon flavour - no itching at all! (haven't tried it myself but I see the dog daily and he has a lovely shiny coat) Keep in mind too that allergies are usually a sign of a lowered immune system so you may want to look at building that up (with a Homeopath or Naturopath) which in turn may alleviate any allergy. Clyde Posted April 7, 2008 Share Posted April 7, 2008 The Pyohex can be quite drying, and using it long term can dry out the coat and can cause itchiness. I would grab some ALOVEEN LEAVE IN CONDITIONER and rub that through both dogs after bathing, made by the same company. It's soothing and moisturising, plus will help stop the itchies. persephone Posted April 8, 2008 Share Posted April 8, 2008 Hi..I would also recommend bathing your dogs less. each time you bath them, oils are removed from the skin/coat. these oils help protect and nourish the skin/hair...so why would you want to continually strip them away ? A fresh food diet is also on my list of recommendations Plenty of threads here about feeding raw foods....tailored to suit a dog's requirements...not just 'human food' ! After all..if fresh is very healthy for humans, why should dogs eat anything else? Vitamin C in a NON ACID formula may help...it did with one of mine who had bad allergic reactions to grass. I used Calcium Ascorbate powder. One thing you may want to try...each time the dogs come back from a walk, or have been oplaying on grass... WASH THEIR FEET . Wash in a very mild baby non-scented soap... rinse well, and dry between toes. This removes any pollen or grass from the feet...don't know about yours, but our dogs clean their feet a lot...thereby ingesting any allergens!! bets of luck with it all... Aly Posted April 11, 2008 Share Posted April 11, 2008 (edited) Hi, Aly had very itchy skin few weeks back, after posting on here got good suggestions, change her diet which I have, she hasnt had any kibble and is on Roo meat Human grade(pet makes her fart ) raw veges and Barf patties. I also contacted Groomers for shampoo EPO vet grade for her coat, have used it now for 4 weeks, is now shiny her coat is growing back and hardly any hair loss, and best of all no itchies . Bow Wowy Posted April 12, 2008 Share Posted April 12, 2008 "Innova Evo" is a great food for dogs with allergys. It is a high protien (from meat not gluten) low carb diet and is 100% grain free. It is nutrient dense so you feed less than most other premium foods and is very palatable. I have heard of dogs being able to go off cortisone after being on this diet. Check out www.evopet.com .
