Purple Julie
Jyra has two small lumps on her neck (back neck). Mum and Dad say they look like warts. The other day a bit came off one, it was like the old lump came off, but there was a new lump already there in the same spot. I'd like to ask you guys what you think they are. Should I take her to the vet about them or should I just leave them? Here are the pictures of just one of them (the other one is harder to find!). The above photo including my fingers to show the size of it. Edited April 4, 2008 by Purple Julie
lucknow
Sorry can't help much, they do look like warts which can be quite common especially in older dogs. If you want to be safe get them checked out by a vet.
gareth
get them checked out, especially if they are growing.
Poppy's mum
Like Garethh says. I waited until Tielle's annual check up (a couple of months) to get a wart like spot checked. It had to be removed. It was a tumour. The vet said it was 'deep' and I felt terrible I had waited at all assuming it was nothing (because she had had a benign lump removed before). She is Ok now but I have to watch for any recurrence. It was all removed according to the path report. And if it is nothing, at least you have set your mind at rest. Staffyluv
Please get a needle aspiration done on these.
Alison
Tyler gets them. I just get a lump asperate done whenever a new one pops up. For her, and many older dogs, they are just growths that come with age. Get them checked for your own piece of mind. It only takes a second, it's cheap and it shouldn't hurt Jyra too much if at all. peaceful
Looks like a melanoma to me. I have no experience with them but if I had a lump like that I would run to the doctor!
Jean26
Hope Jyra is okay. I'd get them checked out asap - i am a worrier and unless i get these things checked out I'll be stressed out about them. Let us know how it goes with Jyra PJ

Purple Julie
Thanks guys. I will ring the vet tomorrow and book her in. What does aspirating them do? Does the lump disappear or just shrink or what?
lucknow
FNA or fine needle aspirate looks at the cells in the lump (fat, pus etc) and can indicate a potential problem or cause. Initial test is 'in house' further samples can be sent to a pathology lab if necessary. A biopsy is recommended if FNA gives any cause for concern. Purple Julie
Hi, I have been to the vet now, and he said that they are sebaceous gland cysts and they are nothing to worry about. He said that they are genetic and she is likely to get more throughout her life.

Sheridan
Just keep an eye on them. Sometimes they get infected and have to be surgically removed. My elderly wheaten has a few with nothing to worry about, the vet advises, but my last kerry blue had them all his life and was in and out of surgery a lot. Fortunately, his favourite place to visit was the vet.
