Hi all,

had a client the other day comment that her dog is allergic to fish and hadn't really come across any one else that had the same problem. She hasn't had the dog to a vets to be diognosed, simply said that she started adding a fish oil supplement and the dog started itching

Is it a common allergy at all??

Interesting. I am suspect about fish with Orbit. He started on Eagle pack after coming home to me and was itchy. EP has fish meal in it. Most of the foods he has been on, had fish meal. I also thought he was itchier during the night when he was getting fish oil in his dinner, but put it down to just the oil. I recently put him on a sensitive skin diet which was only fish protein. His itching possibly got a little worse, but the main thing we noticed was that he constantly had urticaria (hives) down his neck and back. Got him onto a diet with no fish and within 24 hours the hives were gone.

Its possible for dogs to develop an allergy to anything that they have previously eaten in their lives.

I used to have a GSD bitch who would have a swollen abdomen after eating fish. No it wasn't a typical 'Bloat' as Vet checked her on the two occasions it occured as I worried. Both times her abdomen went down after a 24 hour fast. Never gave her fish again though.

That's funny. I brought Chopper to a doggy chiropractor last night and while discussing his diet in relation to his joints she said that tuna is bad and can cause allergies. I'd never heard it before. Him and Angel both have dodgy skin and they eat fish about 4 or 5 times a week. I wonder if it's related.

If your dog is sensitive to Fish oils, I would also be wary about using Iodine/Betadine etc on cuts and wounds.

Many common fish allergies are also liked to a sensitivity to Iodine.

I myself and deadly allergic to Seafood and Iodine. To the point I have to now carry an Epi-pen.
