4 Paws
If a dog has an allergy to a particular ingerdients in a food, how long after stopping the food would you expect to see them return to normal if it's indeed related to food(only a newly introduced food)? Just trying to work out if scratching(and a rash on the belly) is food related or I have also recently found a relative of the wondeing jew plant(scurvy weed)in the yard and it was recently mowed and exposed(grass/weeds were really lony and landlord only just mowed it so exposing the scurvy weed) The introducton of the food and the discovery of the scurvy weed were at about the same time so hard to pin point.OH is going to try and spray the weed when it's not raining but it seems to be all around the ground in patches, not just in one location! puggy_puggy
I am not quite sure but when I did an elimination diet with my boy pug it was at least 4 weeks on nothing but the special food. It didn't help. This year I have changed over his diet to pure BARF and that seems to have really helped as well as just giving him an antihistamine tablet every now and again. What was the new food you introduced?
4 Paws
What was the new food you introduced? She's normally on Nutro Lamb and Rice but as I sell pet products online I like to test all my products I sell with my own dogs so can give customers an honest opinion so changed over to Orijen.I can't be 100% sure she wasn't itching before the gradual change over to Orijen. The other gsd has had no problems(and she's normally my problem girl)on the Orijen I introduced it gradually and it was only on the 3rd day of mixing with the nutro i discovered the rash. I also wash dogs at home and had recently washed a dog that had fleas so thought it may have been fleas so bathed them and it was when i was drying her i noticed the rash on her belly.I used advantix after the bath and stopped the orijen, returning her to nutro. It was the next day i discovered the scurvy weed in the back yard so don't really know for sure what's causing her to scratch . The rash has now gone but she's still scratching and nibbling. So its' been a week of going back on Nutro
lucknow
If the rash is only on the belly it is most likely a contact allergy, I would be most suspicious of the plant. It is an easy target Elimination diets are recommended for 6-8 weeks but symptoms of response are generally evident much earlier.
ShesaLikeableBiBear
We've not had a problem with Nutro causing itching and whilst we are vigilant with wandering jew didnt realise until I brought this site back up that Moses in a Boat or Moses in a Basket also caused problems, we have a ton of it the dogs are forever playing in it, so in the next day or so OUT IT GOES. http://www.balgownievet.com.au/1_gen_derm_...ndering_jew.htm
