Samoyed Grooming

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I read in a post on this forum about powder that can be applied to a Samoyed when grooming. Was the powder baby powder or talcum powder and was the idea to keep the Samoyed white and smelling nice between groomings?

Unfortunately I cannot find the post again.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

The use of powders should be very minimal & i would only use it as a desperate measure until bath time.

I occasionally need to use powder on my showdogs but it is washed out the next day so iit doesnt build up or irriate.

I have used baby powder but no by choice. We use potatoe flour & gebnerally only at shows if the dog has weed o its coat before the hair being tied up or got wet in the rain & dirt from mud/wet grass..

We have a Sammy and we do not use any products or powders in his coat unless he is being groomed to be shown that day.

Like Settrlvr we use potato flour as well if we were going to use a powder or chalk to touch up around the face.

You shouldn't need to use powders if the dog is not being shown, it is lovely to have your dogs looking nice, bright and white though. Try a good whitening shampoo. I use plush puppy products but there are heaps of other great brands on the market as well. I will use a normal shampoo first to get all the dirt out of the coat then wash again using a whitening shampoo.

If you are going to use powder/potato flour or the like for the show ring don't use to much and comb it through properly, there is nothing more hilarious then a cloud of white dust billowing from the dog as it runs around the ring!

I dont have a problem with using talc or baby powder, but I guess not all the time.

I use it on my puppies when I cant bath them before a show, or for cleaning up accidents.

I have a bottle of talc in my grooming box, along with potato flour, but the potato flour is mainly used for drying coats.

And yes make sure they are thoroughly dry to prevent smelly coats.

I think it was my post you saw about using the powder, but it was in reply to a specific question about grooming a rescued dog with a terrible coat. I have two rescued Sams and when we got them both they had not been groomed in many months, the talc/baby powder (doesn't matter which) can be used very sparingly as it helps detangle knots. My latest rescue Sam had to have a lot of his coat cut off as it was so matted and felted together and the baby powder helps untangle knots of what's left so it's not pulling them too much when you comb.

The thread I replied to was in relation to another girl's rescued Sam, she said his coat was horrible and filthy and smelled and she was considering clipping him but I advised she try the powder first which would help with the smell and help untangle the knots.

I've never shown a Samoyed so am clueless about grooming them in that way, you shouldn't need to use the power normally if they are regularly brushed and kept knot-free.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

After reading your comments it was Mushiemum's comment that had stuck in my mind.

I'm not aiming on showing my Sammy (although he is beautiful) so I will not worry about the powder.

Thank you all again!

Cheers

Stellie
