Weave Poles

Been thinking about the best way to teach my Border to weave. I'm just starting in Agility and am training at Ballarat Dog Club. The way we teach the weave there is with a side stepping dance kinda thing. I understand how it works but my Border is to hypa and fast for that way. I have found this way and want to know what people think of it.

weave poles

She is very good ith the Clicker. I don't use it a lot but find it is really good for teaching a new behavour.

Different dogs learn better with different methods. I taught Cody to weave using a channel (poles off centre that he had to run through, then gradually brought them closer until they were inline). I also did some shaping with him. He never had particularly great weaves though.

I taught Delta to weave 1 pole at a time and with a treat n train at the end. Started with 2 poles and whenever she went through them I pressed the remote (which beeps so sorta like a click) and it dispensed a treat for her. When she was doing it reliably from all angles I added another pole. After about 4 she worked out the pattern and it didnt matter how many I used she would just keep going through to the end. Having the treat dispenser at the end meant she was always looking forward, not at me. I also use 50cm high poles so that she has to keep her head down and really drive through them.

I have done a little bit with Charlie but not much. I have started with some V poles but Im going to actually try the 2 x 2 method with him when I get around to training him as I think it will suit him better. He is my flyball dog at the moment so Im not in any great rush.

Have a look around the net at some different methods. I prefer ones where the dogs actually work out what they are doing, rather than just follow a lure or take cues from your body language. I actually stand at the first weave and don't move when Im shaping weaves as I want the dog to realise they need to keep going. I start walking/running alongside to add speed once they are accurate.

I am now doing channel weaves with mine. With Zoe I started at the club, where they had guides and you lured them through. Didn't work that well, she was slow (and is normally a fast dog) and got lost without the guides. So I retaught it with the channel and she improved.

So I started Kaos with the channel and he is going well. The channel is still open, so he just has to run through not weave, but we are working on entrance angles and understanding that he goes through the channel no matter where we are. Hopefully this will teach an independent weave where I don't have to be right next to him - he is going to be fast!

I first taught a very avg weave with the dance thingo - then re taught them with the clicker (ie 2 by 2) - and now she is getting really fast :) - and what I love most is that her entries improved soooooooo much!!!! (when doing the clicker did the whole teaching entry on both sides etc from the word go...)

edit for method :D

I would do channel weaving with your dog, you already have the drive toward a toy down pat, just need too incorporate it into weaving

Nova had been taught the hopping way and Darcy with the channel method, by far the channel method has had the best result for me.

I use Susan Garett's 2x2 method and found it a really quick way of teaching my dog to weave. It helps them get their speed up too!!! I've been slack, so it's taken me longer than it should :). A lot of people use a combination of the 2x2 and channel weaves. I love the 2x2 for getting the entries right :(

ETA - this is my interpretation of SG method. I think somewhere in my 'lack' of understanding I have turned the method into a part 2x2, part channel weave method. I am up to "closing the gap" on Kinta and adding more poles with Leo. Only been doing it a short while and like I said, not every night. Plan to do lots over Easter. I am very pleased with the progress with this method for Leo aka "Mr Slow poke" in the weavers (watch our vids to see his pathetic attempts!).... I think it really does speed them up - and he doesn't even focus on me anymore :(

Oh and do let me know if i've made a complete shambles of it all!!!!

Not sure I understand completly how that works LP but I will keep it in mind if wha tI want to do doesn't work out. OH is going to use channel with Maggie as she can do the weaver poles if you guide, lure and step it out right. :rainbowbridge: I think she has done them in a competition once.

:rainbowbridge: That's ok - It took me about 50 reads of SG's method before I understood it enough to try it :p. Then I had someone show me when I got stuck... and now i'm still not sure 100%.... but I found if you read it and processed the info, it made sense in the end :p

I used Susan Garrett 2 x 2 method with Moses, I was able to send him to do the weaves whilst standing on the decking.

With Tia at Action Dogs we were using wire barriers next to the weaving poles and taking them away, now I am at Croydon and they are using the 2 x 2 method. Found it a little confusing as a long time since i taught it. The pictures in the book are a bit different to the diagrams. The instructor is also teaching a bit different to the book. Have downloaded and printed those the article you put up Leopuppy. At Croydon they were getting 2 pairs and spreading the way out and sending the dog through each individual pair, instead of gradually moving them in.

No the articles really clear it up. If you have her book "Shaping for Success" it has the method right at the back of the book with some pictures and diagrams, I can bring it and show you if you like. I am in the 8.15am class at Croydon on Sunday.

Might see you on Sunday - I'll come watch the class and see (K is in season).... I have the book too - but found it at times too hard to 'visualise' and hence 'wrote up' my own version  :D

Okay if you look at pages 234 - 237, then look at the diagrams on 239-241, they are actually telling you to do different things. The diagrams look like the channel method but pages 234-237 look like something different. One is telling your dog to go through both sets of poles spaced out at the sides, but the diagram is saying go through the middle. Hard to explain. Do a search for Susan Garrett on youtube and you can see some of her videos. Here is one on crate games,

Yup - that's what I thought too :champagne:.

I have her one jump DVD and crate games DVD - I just wish she'd do one with her 2x2 weaving as I love the method once I got my head around it :cheer:
