Odette
Odette has a couple of retained canine puppy teeth, and I'm having her desexed in about 3 weeks so they're getting removed at the same time.... I've been keeping an eye on them, as they can tend to get a little grubby around the gums, between the adult tooth and the puppy tooth. Ive been brushing them gently with a soft toothbrush before bed to try and get any gunk out, but her gums look a little red around those teeth.. What is the best way to keep her teeth clean and ward off any possible gum disease while im waiting for the operation?
Flaves
Give her a marrow bone every couple of days, that will help clean them and may even remove them
Rysup
I got retained puppy teeth out by giving my puppy a tendon chew. Cleaned his teeth fine too!
Odette
Ive given her tendon chews, i could go and pick up another one tonight actually, thanks! And the marrow bone sounds good - where would i pick one up from? The butcher? Fresh or dried like you might get from a pet store?

Odette
OK, so I bought her a chicken drumstick from Safeway, human grade, and i gave it to her raw.. She had a lot of trouble getting hte meat off, so i cut some of it off for her, and left her with it.... She ate the bone!! Will this be a problem? She left little tracks of bloody marrow all over the place, but Im worried about it splintering in her? It was a raw bone.. I didn't think she could bite through it like she did! She's ~4.5 kg, 7 months old... She's quite small!
huski
My dogs always eat chicken bones entirely, some of them barely chew them before they swallow - even Cherry who is only 5kg eats entire chicken bones and I've never had a problem If you are worried it is too much for her maybe try a chicken neck as they are considerably smaller and easier for them to eat? Odette
I bought a chicken neck too, I've give her that on the weekend.. I didnt realise she could bite through the bone the way she did! I know you cant give them cooked bones because they splinter, but can raw bones do the same thing? I have to say, she was very stinky afterwards too... Poooo!!!!!!!! Be aware of the symptoms of a blockage such as vomiting, absence of poo or sometimes diarrhoea and abdominal tenderness but I don't think you will have a problem. The only thing I would worry about is when the dog practically swallows the bone whole (can happen with chicken necks) because of blockage... but this would be more of a worry with bigs dogs, all my littlies chew their bones properly before swallowing them . My dogs eat all sorts of raw bones - lamb shanks, marrow bones, big juicy red meat bones from the butcher etc and no matter how big they are they manage to eat almost all of the bone!! They are actually quite soft and full of marrow and other yummy things for dogs. In fact, my dogs eat only raw bones and dried food. We don't feed canned food or dog mince. Cherry will be 10 years old this year and she has been eating raw chicken bones since she was a pup... she is only 5kg and we have never had a problem
Odette
Excellent I'll keep feeding them to her then! She LOVED it, especially the bloody marrow... I also noticed at Safeway, in the pet food area (fridge area) there was a unlabelled bag with a couple of bones inside, obviously off-cuts.. Would you feed this? SparkyTansy
Generally i am careful with chicken legs (drumsticks) as they are weightbearing bones and i worry it could split I tend to go for frames (possibly a bit big for Odette, unless you want her to be there all day), wings or necks... Turkey necks are a great alternative also, as they are much bigger so take longer for the larger dog
