Training The Fast Down

My dog drops very quickly, I think it is partly personality. An easy way to polish up any behaviour though is to use clicker training, only reward the faster drops which should very soon start to become quicker and quicker.

Yep I agree, make it a game and use something motivational like a favourite ball or toy. You can do this at dinner time, ask for down then give the dinner bowl. The dog will quickly learn the quicker the response the quicker it gets what it wants.

Ask for a drop/down, as soon as the dog hits the down throw the toy.

The dog will soon learn that the faster it goes down the faster it gets it's reward. IMO if you use corrections (I have seen people stomp on the lead) it will only make your dog down slower.

Odin22, check that your dog is not suffering any pain or discomfort in his hips or joints first before proceeding with speeding up his drops. Just a suggestion as a Rotti I was training recently who's drops were very slowly has been diagnosed with early hip displasia.

I am having a similar problem with Clancy, whilst he drops he seems to go down in a way that is different to any dog I have trained before.

I am wondering if it is a Whippet / long legged dog thing?

His down seems slow because he seems to start to drop in the front, then cantilevers down with his back end, then finnishes his down at the front - sorry that is not a clear description but it is the best I can do!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get Clancy to do a proper down?

Oh and Helen, you are so right - Brits are amazing at doing a fast down!
