Again it depends what sort of photos when it comes to magazines. Alot of them are very arty and someare like Aust Photography which I bought for a while but got sick of their anti digital tirade and they made sports photography sound so very difficult. Most of it was landscapes etc - very useful info if you want to learn about that type of photography However the reader photo assessments are interesting and they did start running theme comps each month just before I stopped buying it. Might be worth flicking through the magazines at the newsagent and seeing what you find interesting or have the tips you are looking for.

Firstly, I'd order 'Understanding Exposure' from Amazon.com. That taught me more than any magazine. It's a very popular book.

It depends on what type of photography you are interested in. I used to buy a lot of mags so I could absorb the info in there but now I only subscribe to 2. It was cheaper subscribing on line than waiting for them to hit the newsagents - and I get the latest issue and don't have to wait a month.

As I'm interested in landscape, travel and wildlife only I buy UK mags, 'Outdoor Photography' which is focused on digital and film, has stunning scenes in it and isn't about editing every photo you take and another, very different one, called 'Digital DSLR User' which focuses just on DSLRs. Both are English. I don't like the Australian mags and find them boring.

Better photography is the only aussie mag I like...it only comes out quarterly though I think.

My favourite book for Aussie photograpahers, especially if you love the great outdoors, animals, candid people shots etc. is Steve Parish's "Photograph Australia". The full colour, full text/photos one (there's a cheaper condensed version with most of the pics missing).

For understanding basic photography concepts, artistic composition and general exposure info, this book is excellent....but more so are the ideas you'll get from his photos. He shows so many incredible ways to photograh subjects most of us would not give a second glance to. And they at the doorstep of all of us.

I also like a Lonely Planet publication again

Landscape Photorogahy - taking better pictures - Peter Eastway. Covers filters, light, photographing in all types of landscapes from rainforests to mountain ranges covered with snow. Lots of lovely pictures too he has taken over the years with film and digital - he only shoots digital now.

There is also a similar LP book called Wildlife Photography - Andy Rouse. How to photograph animals in the wild and has lovely images.
