Puppy Ear Mites?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I have been wiping out the ears of my 8 week old cavalier pup and there is a dark brown "dirt" coming out. One ear does have a smell, not overly strong but a smell none the less. I use aristopet ear cleaner on my other cav to clean her ears and was wondering whether I would be able to use this on such a young pup to clean his ears or if it could be ear mites and should just take him straight to the vet? What do others think?

My puppy is a cav cross, and the breeder told me to watch her ears for ear mites as she got older. After a couple of weeks i did notice some brownish buildup, so i tried Epi-Otic on her, and she was fine! Cleaned it up immediately, its probably just debris. They say you can use it on puppies and kittens of any age?

I would think it fine to use Epi Otic as a general ear cleaner unless the dog is irritated by the ear. In that case I would always get a vet check first, particularly to check the ear drum before I put anything in. I use Revolution on my foster puppies to avoid ear mites.

I use revolution as well.Oops its now March must do the stuff.

Holymum just clean the ears its probably from all the playing the pup has done with litter mates.

I'd clean the outer ear- no poking in to the canal and see how it goes.

Cavs are floppy-eared and so more prone to ear infection (poodles can be, too). I clean with very dilute Malaseb (antibacterial- antifungal shampoo) 1:50 with water. My dogs occasionally have brownish wax. If it persisted, they'd be off to the vet.

Once you know what infected ears smell like, you'll not mistake it again.

Have the vet check when next vaccs are due if it improves.

Give your pup a dose of Revolution, as well as heartworm it also kills fleas and ear mites.

Continue using the ear cleaner. Are you cleaning out all the gunk you can see? If not with cotton buds carefully clean the rest of the ear.

If the ears become red and infected looking then I would go to the vets and get some medicated ear drops and maybe some antibiotics.
