Paganman Posted March 1, 2008 Share Posted March 1, 2008 My brothers dogs have got fleas and hes brought some advocate but none of them are on heartworm preventives or been tested for it so is it safe for himr touse it I read somewhere that giving heartworm stuff to a dog with heartworm can kill it? Thats what the pamphlet says anyways, but I always thought you had to get the tested first, as if the Advocate kills the heartworm, they end up caught in the dogs lungs, which is what kills it. I think you'll find that Advocate only kills the microfilariae (larvae), but has no effect on the adult heartworms, thus making it safe to use on heartworm affected or untested dogs.
