What Training Treats

I would like to know what training treats do people who feed raw (BARF, prey model diet, etc..) use. I find it hard to use 'raw' treats and I do end up using a lot of dry food.

The 'raw' treats I use are:

chicken necks

baby carrots

chicken/turkey pieces

cheese

I honestly don't know how anyone can find raw foods to use as training treats  I'd love to hear it too! I mostly feed cooked chicken breast or cheese, or *cough* natures gift treats.

That's a very impressive and imaginative list!!! I am sure my dogs will love that!

How big are your pieces of uncooked sweet potato or pumpkin?

Hmm where do I start.................. <waves at Ptolomy>

Hope I am not giving away too many secrets -

First up normal treats if I want lots of repetitions as she is still learning:

- Cheese

- Cooked sausage

- Raw Chicken necks cut into thirds

- Bits of raw kidney frozen

- Raw sweet potato

- Assorted left over cooked meat so things like roast beef

- Herb and garlic kangaroo kebabs cut up into small pieces

- Also have been known to use carrot, frozen peas, frozen beans, bits of fruit like pear chopped up

- Smoke salmon

- Occasionally things like fritz

- Small raw pork ribs

Then we have jackpots (basically anything she would get for a meal)

- Chicken frames

- Pork ribs

- Turkey wings

- Lamb forequarter

- Chicken wings

- Marrow bones

- Tins of Tuna

- Sardines

- Yoghurt

- Even veggie mix with a hint of tuna or something.

I guess you could say very rarely does she not get her food as a reward or something. I might do a set of scent articles and then tell her she is absolutely brilliant then run inside and get her a frame out of the freezer. I might place her food on the ground and about turn and send her to go and eat it.

I have also been known to fill her bowl with something like sardines and then let her help herself to a small amount before taking it back and then working on something else.

Darn Ptolomy was too quick and posted her list first!!!!!!!!

Sweet Potato, Cheese and Pumpkin pieces are all about the same size - small cubes about 1-1.5cm. I usually prepare 4-5 chinese containers at a time and just leave them in the fridge and grab one each night to take training (+other treats and jackpot containers) - or if I am doing something inside at home I can grab the container from the fridge.

I had to come up with some alternatives to meat because of my little allergic girl and she can eat all of the above.

So chunkers and 4 legs are OK for her? Mine is very sensitive too so I was wondering if these would be OK for her.

Oh and by chunkers do you mean the VIP ones?

Hmmm apparently Ptolomy said I should give a list of what I used prior to my WA flogging - er um nothing very original mainly just cooked sausage and cheese and raw chicken necks as jackpots :) .

Can you tell what I learnt BIGTIME - argh Ness threatened to go back and live with Ptolomy if I didn't improve my range of treats  .

 :p

It's great that she has such a variety now

I clearly have to learn about the 'raw treats cuisine' so don't mention this thread to Laffi and Midge as they might stop working for the old piece of carrot lol.

Unfortunately chunkers (you can now get lamb and vege ones and chicken and eggs ones - sorry not sure what brand they are) and 4 legs are not OK for Beans  They send her into a red raw itching mess. :) that takes days and days to heal. At the last obedience trial of last year she picked up and ate something tiny on the oval and the following night she had chewed her foot red raw - so much so that she was so lame she couldn't do agility - it took 2 weeks for her to recover from that.

She can eat goat so I have sourced 1kg dried goat for $20 a bag which is great and I can also get goat bones, goat shanks and goat meat as well which I can use at any time for her. I did find a bickie she can also eat - so occassionally she will get these as training treats and funny enough she will do back flips for them.
