Ticks

Hi everyone :mad

We are going to be travelling to NSW next month to a dog show in Bargo, staying for the weekend.

Now, I know nothing about ticks, so please excuse the possibly silly questions - any advice would be much appreciated :banghead:

Does anyone know if we would need to treat the girls with a tick preventative for going to that area of NSW?

Following on from that, what tick treatments would you recommend? I was looking at Advantix last night and wondering if it would be safe to get a packet of the 10 - 25kg one, give one dose to Molly (she weighs about 15kg) and 2 doses to Enya (weighs about 35kg), instead of buying one packet of 10 - 25kg for Molly and a separate packet of 25kg + for Enya.

I'm such a tick newbie :whip:

Thanks for any help :mad

Maybe Bargo is inland and cold enough not to have ticks but could you ring a local organising the show to ask?

But then again it also has lots of bushland too. If not sure I would use Advantix just in case!

Yes you can give advantix as you suggested. I've always been told by vets that it is safer to over dose than underdose.

If using it I would put it on your dogs the night before you travel. It works for 2 weeks for ticks.

Yes, being inland it might not be such a hot spot for ticks. But with all the recent rains and a mild summer, Paralysis ticks love humidity and mild weather, best to err on the side of caution. Also with people and animals traveling into the site, ticks can be carried in with them.

Even with treatment, the most important thing is to check daily for the presence of ticks that can start pit the size of a sesame seed or up to and over the size of yellow split pea. Check the entire dog, every nook and cranny and between the toes, especially around ears, neck, shoulder and under the tail.

Thanks for the advice IDWT! I will make sure we check both girls thoroughly each day.

I've ordered some Advantix, and it is on the way as well, so they will definitely have a treatment of that a few days before we leave.

I'm probably being a worry wort, but so what :cry:
