 Share

Recommended Posts

hi,

my pup is pomeranian its 16 weeks old now and can go out just wandering cause i been hearing a few different ways of doing this.

my neighbour says all she does is go to vet and have some kind of needle once a year and its sufficient for her dog.

the vet told me advocate once a month is good enough and thats all she needs?

if possible i prefer the first option cause easier and i dont forget

wats everyones opinion on this matter how much things is enough? is there anything else im missing

You would go to the vet yearly for the dogs annual vaccinations, and the Advocate monthly treatment is for fleas, ticks etc. You will also need to look at a regular worming treatment.

There are many different beliefs on vaccinations and if you do a search on the forum you will find heaps of info, but yearly is the usual

I'm just guessing here....but could your neighbour be thinking of heartworm injections? These can be done yearly OR you can give a combined monthly flea, intestinal and heart worm tablet monthly. I wouldn't give the yearly injection due to associated health risks and reliability of the injection. I use Sentinel Spectrum chewable tablets on the same day each month and it's too easy

As BC said, yearly vaccinations are usual but there is a lot of debate about this too.

I think you must be talking of the annual Heartworm injection Proheart 12................If so , I would NOT give it under any circumstances (seizures/death are 2 things that can happen), especially to a dog of the size you are talking of......

I'd be doing vaccinations- how many has pup already had?

Heartworm monthly tablets (prefer tablets)

Fleas +Paralysis tick prevention (e.g. Frontline Plus, Advantix)

Intestinal worms.

see http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=81686

If you ever need to put your dog in a kennel or do obedience classes, then they will need to be vaccinated- usually what's called "C5".

Puppies commonly have intestinal worms, so it's worth doing in the early months, then stopping if you wish.

Heartworm- well it's much better to prevent than try to treat it. I'm not sure if you've left it a bit late and have to have a blood test first? (if you give heartworm preventatives to a dog already infected, it makes them very ill).

Fleas are rampant in summer. My dogs get fleas if I don't treat them and I don't want fleas in my house. Advantix works well on my dogs and also covers for paralysis tick (I'm in a paralysis tick area).

You'll have plenty of people tell you their dog lived to upteen years on the cheapest dog food of the time, never came inside, never went to the vet, blah, blah, blah, but I think it's a small price to pay for preventatives to make both your lives and theirs better :banghead:

I've been using the Advocate spot treatment on my 2 Aussie Terriers for a couple of years now with good results. :whip:

Applied monthly it treats fleas, heartworm, all intestinal worms (except tapeworm )demodectic mange, sarcoptic mange, ear mites & lice. I have never had a problem with this product. I use Drontal to treat for tape worm every other month.

You friend could be talking about the annual C5 vaccination injection.

I would never ever let my dogs have the heart worm injection, from what i've heard way too risky.

Good luck in finding the right product for your dog. :banghead:

hi there

i have a puppy and was also looking into this too

the yearly injection is called a c5. You will need this once a yr to keep your puppy immune from diseases that she/he can catch. On top of this you will need a heart worm and intestinal worm treatment so your puppy does not get heartworm which can kill your puppy.

Flea treatment is also important to keep your puppy happy and not scratching.

I use the advocate once a month because it does 3 things in one. (covers heartworm, selected intestinal worm and flea treatment). Because it is only once a month it is much easier for me to remember.

In order to cover tape worm i use drontal tablets. Because yours is a puppy you will need to feed drontal depending on your dog age. It is 8weeks, then 12weeks, thereafter it is every 3 months.

Hope this helps...

To make it more confusing.. there is a new vaccine introduced in australia which is an equivalent to C5. they call it nobivac.. and the vets say it is much better than normal c5. Not all vets use them cos it is still quite new. The nobivac is every 3 yrs when your puppy becomes an adult. Since your puppy has already taken its full vaccination, you can decide on nobivac 12 months later

PM me if you need more info

good luck!!

Hi Johnwilly, if you use the Advocate spot treatment once a month, you don't need to give any heartworm tablets, Advocate allready treats this. Thats why I love the Advocate so much, you don't have to stuff around with too many separate products. Like i said all you have too do is give them some Drontal every other month. I've been treating my dogs this way for a couple of years now & i've never had any problems, IMO i have 2 very very healthy dogs.

Good Luck!
