jaegertheweim
I received a free 3kg bag of this in the mail today. It says on the package that it contains "100% ultra digestible vegetal proteins" and is supposed to "limit the risk of food intolerance" Ingredients listed are: vegetable protein isolate, rice, wheat, copra oil, minerals, soya oil, beet pulp, vegetable fibers, l-lysine, refined fish oil, fructo=oligo saccharides, psyllium husks and seeds, taurine, hydrolysed yeast extract, barage oil, marigold extract My weim is doing well on Eagle Pack but I was thinking of maybe trialing this RC on him later on. Do you think I should be adding fresh meat to it since there is no meat content in the product? thanks in advance
TeamSnag
i know its not what u have but I feed mine royal canin light.. i do add raw meat to there meals with it..
Flaves
THe whole purpose of that particular type of food is for dogs who have allergies to meat and meat proteins. So i your dogs doesnt there is no harm in adding it in. Personally if my dog did NOT have a problem with proteins then i would not feed it the special food. However as it was a freebie, why not just nix it in with his EP and use it up?
jaegertheweim
Say he gets 2 cups of EP per meal.. should I just add half cup of this?
Gomez the Norfolk
I'm with IHF, if your dog is doing fine on the EP, why mess with it? You could always donate the freebie to a rescue or a pound -
Guest Tess32
I wouldn't feed it. Rice and Wheat = pointless. Keep him on EP.
Flaves
If you wanted to use it up - replace 1/2 a cup of his EP with it. But why mess with what works?
jaegertheweim
hmm... I might just put it in his kong then and use it up that way
sas
Hiya, Apologies for bringing up an older thread. We've started Dante on this product as a food trial as we don't have a novel meat protein to try. Here's some info on it for those who may be interested: * This product was developed for sensitive dogs with food intolerance. * Whether the amino acids come from animal or vegetable protein, the molecular structure is exactly the same. Dispite the fact that the dog is naturally carnivrous, the indentical nutritional content of vegetable and animal proteins means that perfectly adapted foods can be developed. * 100% Vegetable protein - The exclusive diet limits the risks of food intolerance which can be expressed by both digestive & skin signs (diarrhoea..., itching...). Many are against using starches & fibres, however starch as the energy source with cereal fibres ensure good digestive transit. I can say that Dante has had runny poos pretty much the entire time we have had him and since switching over his poos are finially normal. I'm personaly a BARF fan and never before would have considered only limiting a dogs diet to a Veggie base (I guess a lack of education on my behalf....never needed to investigate the options before), however with a Great Dane puppy I can't provide a 100% BARF diet yet as the protein levels are too high and with his skin issues we decided after trying a number of other brands to give this one a go. So we're 4 days in and will let you know how we go. Edited February 28, 2008 by sas
peigirl
Sas I would be very interested to hear how Dante goes with this, thanks for bringing it up.
shmoo
why the taurine? is it for cats too? or are they just just trying to cover all proteins?
sas
Taurine has been a present element in cat food due to its vital properties and just recently pet food manufacturers have been implementing Taurine into dog foods also realizing that this A.A. can be very beneficial to dogs as well as cats. The Spotted Devil
Sas, I wonder whether you'll notice any behaviour changes too.....? The very first thing I was taught in my animal nutrition lectures was that animals do not have a specific requirement for specific feeds and that the feeds consumed are less important than the quantity and supply of nutrients derived from the feed during digestion. Taurine is not considered an EAA for dogs as far as I knew but if you think about it makes sense. It's destroyed by high temperatures, which is why it is vital for cats as they cannot synthesise it....but for dogs, perhaps some is better than none. Very interesting. I'll be watching this space with interest ;) Edited March 1, 2008 by The Spotted Devil
