neorotic Posted February 7, 2008 Share Posted February 7, 2008 (edited) I had a neo bitch desexed yesterday and last night she was screaming in pain and couldnt move her back legs. She was taken to the vets late last night where they thought she may have had a reaction to the anesthetic as she was still very dopey, they kept her overnight but this morning she still cannot move her back end. They have taken xrays and think it has something to do with her nerves. Jed Posted February 8, 2008 Share Posted February 8, 2008 Best wishes for her. Could she walk following the operation? I too, think it could be a pinched or damaged nerve. If that is so, it could well be worth a trip to a good chiro - particularly before you make any decisions re pts. If the nerve is damaged, it may heal, but slowly. If it is cut, there is no chance of any feeling returning. Conversely, "something" in her back or hip may be out, which can easily be repaired with a little manipulation. I would want to know exactly what was wrong with her, and why - before I did anything rash. I realise it will be difficult to manage a neo bitch with no use of her back end, but it may be worth it in the short term. Something may well have happened to her whilst being carried or moved into position. I would be also checking for bruises or signs she may have fallen? Xrays won't show nerve damage..did they say there was evidence of a pinched nerve or herniated disk? Get them to show YOU the Xrays, and explain what you are looking at!! My first thought was that maybe they did drop her or somehow injure her back whilst she was under. GA works on the nerves so maybe it has done some damage to her somehow or they are still paralised. My old family dog, a corgi, had a similar thing happen to him after he went under GA to remove some lumps. He was very weak on his back legs for some time I recall. It is years ago and he is long gone so I don't really remember the details. We always thought that the vet had dropped him or twisted his back in some way. But basically they said surgeons wouldnt touch her because of having no feelings in her feet and even if the did it would cost thousands and the chances would be extremely low for such a big dog to recover with full use of her legs. Mind you this is the worse case scenario. Hopefully she just has swelling around the nerve and the cortisone will fix it. Hopefully will know tomorrow and yes i will always get a second opinion. I would be suggesting to the Vet who did the op that $$$ wont be an issue as it will be THEM who will be paying for any further treatment she requires at whatever specialist/chiro etc you decide to take her to to fix the mess they caused..........
