Baileys mum Posted February 7, 2008 Share Posted February 7, 2008 Hi Dolers, i was wondering if i could get some advice & reassurance I have an 11 year old Australian Terrier that has very bad breath ( despite me feeding her raw bones all her life ) Any way my vet has told me that she needs to have atleast 4 teeth removed & also have her teeth professionally cleaned. Its going to cost me alot of money, but thats not what i'm worried about. The vet has told me that at her age, there will be a risk of putting her under general aneasthetic. I am now really unsure of what to do, I don't want her to end up with a toothache in her later years, She is otherwise very healthy for her age, i was wondering what advice other dolers can give me & what they would do in my situation. She already has infection and calculus in her mouth, if the vet intends to remove 4 teeth and do a clean, which can give her / or aggravate heart problems. Doesn't really sound if you have a choice. Cheers Basically if she needs teeth removed she already has a tooth ache,I had my 17 yr old dogs teeth cleaned and she was fine. I would suggest getting a full pre anaesethic blood test done before her op this will cost an extra $78 approx but with her age you want to know how her liver etc are functioning. get it done asap. she will be much happier. Poppy's mum Posted February 7, 2008 Share Posted February 7, 2008 Next step if left unremedied is a tooth abscess or osteomyelitis in the jaw...teeth left like this can do really serious damage to health and the immune system. Anaesthetics are very good these days... there is always a risk with surgery but unless there is some other factor you haven't mentioned, i wouldn't hesitate. We had an 11 year old poodle who had most of his teeth out at that age (came from the rspca years ago). He llived to 22. He wouldn't have if his bad teeth remained. Tahna Posted February 7, 2008 Share Posted February 7, 2008 My parents had their 14 year old Lab have some teeth removed under anaethetic. no problems but we were advised of the increased risks due to her age. Baileys mum Posted February 7, 2008 Author Share Posted February 7, 2008 Thanks everyone for all your advice, i would hate to think that Jessie was in any pain, i don't think i have much of a choice in this matter, so i will be booking her in for the procedure. Fingers crossed everyone that she will be ok. I just really freaked out when the vet said there was a risk at her age,but i don't want her dying of blood poisoning from a tooth infection either. Cavandra Posted February 7, 2008 Share Posted February 7, 2008 There is always risk with surgery no matter what age but If you dont have it done, the teeth is what will cause her to go down hill in her old age, as the infection does affect the heart I would have it done if she were mine. mona Posted February 7, 2008 Share Posted February 7, 2008 i agreee with the other posters... Our oldest girl has just turned 11, and had an anaesthetic a few months ago to have 3 teeth removed. Definitely get the pre bloods done ..... just to make sure everything is functioning normally. She will be just fine , and lots happier without her tooth ache !!
