Looking For Experienced Trainer

My 5 year old desexed GSDx Caleb was a rescue dog that we adopted when he was 5 months old. When we got him he was scared of everything: people, dogs, unknown places - you name it, he was frightened of it. With a lot of work, we got him to the point where people were great and he would play with other dogs , although Rory our beagle had to play with the dog first before he would join in. Then our offlead dog park got closed down and straight after that we had three incidents where Caleb was harassed and threatened by off lead and out of control dogs. Caleb went from being a dog who would greet and play with other dogs to a dog that would growl and threaten other dogs. This was about three years ago. During that time, we have managed to get Caleb to the point where he can see another dog without his hackles going up, but we are still nowhere near getting Caleb relaxed enough to meet other dog let alone play with one.

I don't want to move to the point of letting Caleb interact with other dogs without professional help. So much could go wrong and I would never forgive myself if he hurt another dog.

Therefore, I need recommendations of trainers/behaviourists that have a lot of experience working with aggressive dogs and that train by use of positive reinforcement. Does anyone know of any in the Sydney area?

Contact Steve Austin (and his partner, Vicki).

They are great!! and do NOT use any harsh method.

My toy poodle was extremely nervous and timid by people and some dogs.

After being trained by them for a few weeks (while i was on holiday), she has become very lady-like.

Her problem with people has greatly improved.

This was actually the 2nd encounter I had with Vicki.

So call them up on (02)96511747, or visit their site.

P.S. I had an extremely unfortunate experience with one of those so called "pet training professions" --- Bark Busters.

The method they used was harsh and inhumane (he kept on using the check chain to choke my dog & to chuck these mental chains to freak him out).

The problem was worsen after the visit.

I was referred to Steve and Vicki soon after.

But they said that my dog was trumatised and ruined by the previous "training" he had.

So nothing could be done, but to put him to sleep....

From then on, i trust nobody else but Steve and Vicki.

And so, I had my toy poodle which I got after the incident, to be trained by Steve and Vicki~

Please make a wise decision about which trainer you are going to choose.

Dont wanna have the situation repeated again!

K9 Force is the best near you.

Good luck

Winnie L, you're not the only person who has had bad experiences with barkbusters being cruel but most other trainers do not use their harsh methods.

I'm glad you got results with Pet Resort. Dog training is really about people training :scold: . As this place was live in, did you get trained as well or just your dog?

I was curious

Pet Resort provided me with a 1&1/2 hrs training when i picked up my dog.

i was offered to attend any of the classes that they held every week for free.

i can also call in to arrange consultations for free.

so, that's pretty good~

Excellent  . I haven't used a "leave your dog" place before so wondered how that worked. Free consultations are fantastic too.
