Mega Has Arrived

Hi guys

Mega the Saint Bernard x has arrived safe and sound from the pound down south. She is a beauty, but has some skin, ear and eye problems.

Her ears are very very swollowen and stiff but don't appear to be soar to touch and inside appears to be closed up and swollen. does anyone know what might be causing this and what can I do for it until I can get her to the vet tomorow afternoon.

Her eyes where full off yellow crap and I have washed these out with water and they appear cleaner and she can see. She also has very snotty (yellow) nose.

any advice until tomorrow.

Also I was advised that a pup from the pound had passed away from pravo today. she was not near the pup and they parvac (i think thats what it was called)weekly my fur kids have had all there vaccinations, is it likely that she could be contagious?

Provided your dogs are vacc they should not get parvo.

Runny noses normally mean some kind of respiratory or sinus infection which will need treated with antibiotics.

I would keep her seperate from your dogs until she has been checked out by the vet.

She's gorgeous, very Saintly looking.

She could also have entropian and suffered with goopey eyes a long time. Hopefully it is simply part if the infection. Respiratory infections in giant breeds and especially seniors can develop easily in to being quite serious so keep her quiet, seperate and let us know how you go at the vets

Henry had eyes like her when he first came out of the pound (same pound too )

It was because he was just so run down and sick. He had a couple of courses of Cephalexin and everything settled down with time and good food. We bought huge bottles of saline and every morning we would gives his eyes a "flush" out to dislodge all the garbage and mucus. It was quite horrid

I was saying to Storm that I have seen dogs like this before come out of this pound. If it is not mange then I think it is probably very severe flea dermatitis. Because we are coastal some of the houses right near the beaches have major issues with fleas and the owners just don't stay on top of them. Not sure if you saw the thread last year on Bronson who was a rotti that we rescued from that pound. He was exactly as you described and his coat and condition came back within weeks. We just fed him a good diet, flea treated and wormed him and he bounced back really quickly

The ears could be haemotomas - hard to tell from the photos. A mild antibiotic ointment could do the eyes - with the drooping eyelids, dust etc can lodge there and make them sore and gooey.

She wont pass on parvo unless she has it, had it, unless she has the virus (from another dog) on her coat.

She may just be a bit unwell, and the runny nose and eyes are a symptom - wrong food, stress; and a course of antibiotics, or good food and vit C would put her right.

These things combined can also be a sign of an allergy, probably a food allergy, and a change of food, particularly to raw, might improve matters.

thanks guys for all the advice and winterpaws I will look up the thread you mentioned. and yes I plan to keep her.

We went to the vet and have eye ointment, ear drops and antibiotics. She is much better, swelling in one ear has gone done a lot. the vet said her ears will never be normal as she has old haemotomas.

she can hear at last and we will tither test her for vacination requirements once she is well.

I will get some vitamin C today, how much will she need and how often, she is nearly 70kg.

she is just the best nature old girl and has put up with ears and eyes and bathing, nothing phases her and really loves a belly rub.
