Rottweiler Health Issues And Nutrition

Considering that we have this Sub forum i thought that we might as well put it to good use while it is here..

Its great to talk about life and things in general but i think that we need to be providing information to people on the breed and considering that there are a few terminally ill Rotts out there then i though that i would take this opportunity for people to give advice on Cancer, Hereditary disease, Treatment options, medications and Diet options for sick Rottweilers...

Here is a great site that offers so much information on the Rottweiler take the time to read through...

http://www.rottweilerhealth.org/

Kiesha may have been diagnosed with a Osteosarcoma in a rare location and there may be nothing that we can do for her but if we can help and try and find information to show others then there may be something that will help someone else....

Thank you for starting this thread, Bluepoppy

I would like to throw another link into the mix

http://www.herbal-treatments.com

People are probably sick of me saying this, but I have no doubt that Robert McDowell's mixtures assisted Stewie's quality of life while he was fighting Osteosarcoma.

I am also toying with the idea of collating information on cancer in our breed based on bloodlines - still early days of thinking, and it will probably just remain a thought in my head  , but one day I think it's something that needs to be examined.

Allerzeit, that is great if you could. I can see only one problem, owners/breeders being honest about what their dog/s died of. Many will not as they do not want their lines tarred.

I have a couple for you if you do set up a data base.

I have always wanted the NRCA to set up a longevity database.

Unfortunately, that is the reason it will probably only ever be an idea in my head

The fact that everytime we turn around we hear of another Rottweiler with cancer - particularly Osteosarcoma - is terrifying, but I just don't know that the Rottweiler community will ever be able to work together sufficiently to properly investigate any genetic links. Still, I can dream and think.

I wish you luck to Allerzeit in collating information on cancer in our breed. Most of what I've heard is 'Oh no, there's no cancer in my lines." This has come from overseas, not necessarily Aus.

I did buy the Robert McDowell osteosarcoma mixture and also the Maritime Pine Bark mix that he suggested. I can't use them though because they're not compatible with the drugs Sophie is on. They arrived the day after we consulted with the oncologist.

Also Sophie has more problems with her gum tumour than she does with the osteo in her mandible. The gum tumour seems to be far more aggressive and painful so I have to consider that and use the appropriate drugs to deal with it. So the Robert McDowell stuff is sitting in the cupboard along with many other things I've bought and never tried.

BP how is Kiesha today?

I too believe that Robert McDowell's herbals are GREAT.

I've used the Osteosarcoma mix with Op recovery mix & believe it gave my boy a much more comfortable recovery from his leg amputation & 6mths after he was found clear of cancer (blood test)

I also use Bone Healing/Maturity Mix on my growing pups

My last 4 dogs hip X-Rays have scored 0:0 :D

I'm happy to give info on my dogs health issues, Cancer or Immunity issues!

Could someone perhaps start a new thread along the lines of Nutrition, Grooming, Health and Exercise please? I'd like to come back and discuss nutrition/diet. I'm also sure that other posters esp. newbies to Rotts will like to talk about this without railroading this thread which is more for our sick doggies. I wouldn't feel comfortable asking menial diet questions and whining about thunder thighs George when I know I am lucky he is in full health, when there are others having a seriously rough time.

Thanks :D

Dru,

Until Troy decided whether this sub forum will stay or not,

no new topics can be started.

I think this particular thread though was not made with the intention of discussing our sick puppies.

There is another thread to fill that purpose.

The sub heading of this one includes diet, along with health issues.

I don't think anyone would see you as sabotaging this thread if you discussed any of those issues :D

Dru, considering that we can't start a new topic i see no reason to put information on Diet and Exercise in here....

Even though George may not be sick you still need to get the information to help him and hopefully someone can help him beat those thunder thighs :)

Thanks Oonga!

Will take some pics of flubberguts tomorrow and come back, hopefully I won't be shamed and outed after you see them :) For the first time in my life, I just cannot keep a dog lean. :)

If you are looking at health/nutrition sites relevant to Rotties (and other breeds!) a very interesting and useful one is run by someone I know in the US. She is a Rottie breeder and nutritionist: B-Naturals

It is a commerical site (good products but US based) but the most valuable info is contained in the newsletter section - some absolutely fantastic articles.Newsletter Directory

Also check out her links and email lists page which is a wealth of resources.
