RealityBites
I will be posting this in the breeders section as soon as I am able to, but in the meantime in case anyone is browsing that knows........... What tests need to be done for the Doberman? I know vWd, and where and how to get that done. I think there is also liver and thyroid? Assume that's done through a vet? Do they also need hips and elbows done? And what about eye tests? And at what age do they need to be done? Thanks guys
MonElite
vWD, liver and thyroid ( its a blood test). hips and elbows (x ray) Id wait for the dog to fully grow for that, however hip dispalsia isnt common in dobes. Eye and mouth - just at the vets, they just look into the dogs eyes. You can also do a cardio test - halter would be the best if you can get it from somewhere, otherwise whatever they do at the vets. My dogs have vwd done. Liver and thyroid pretty much every year. Divani has got eye and mouth certificate. go to dobepac and check some examples of what you want to see in certificates. Dogs to check - if you go to profiles find the dog and than use the button Genetics. Fireax Thuderstorm - I think he has had a lot of tests done. Chektaf Supreme Thor - he would have a fair bit done as well. I know he had the cardio test done Imxquisit Twice as Fancy Fireax Xtravaganza - I think she had her hips and elbows done. And my Divani - Fireax Twice the Fun, or Rex - Alldobe Strike it Lucky, I have send the results to Dobepac but not sure if it got updated.
Garloch
Hey RealityBites, You can post in the breeders section of the Forums anytime you like. You can answer your own post if you want to chat to other poster's or ask further questions on your topic. Others can answer your questions - and are generally very happy to help educate people and give them the benefit of their wisdom. What you cannot do (until you've bred at least one registered litter, and I think you also have to be a member of your local canine council) is answer anyone else's post. Genetic testing for Vwd - which place do you use guys? I know of Vetgen in america, which are spot-on; and there is a company in Melbourne, but I've not heard good reports about them. Are there any others? I don't have a Dobe, but my breed suffers from Vwd we have a small genetic pool to pick from. Not every breeder with my breed does genetic testing unfortunately. I would NEVER breed from a carrier or one that did not have a certificate that I had sighted myself.
Dogsfevr
" just at the vets, they just look into the dogs eyes." Thats not correct. To get a current eye clearance you need to see a eye specialist not your normal vet.Your normal vet can not just simply look into the eys & tell you there fine its not that simple. If your planning to breed have you contacted your breeder??As they will be bale to tell you what you need & who in your stae would be the people to see. Some use different people to read there scores etc etc. Your Dobe club in your state would also have advice. The mouth certificate for full dentition im not sure.some did X ray through a dental specialist but i am not sure what is current or not in that area. Hips area must & scores can only be done after a set age although some breeders have different ages they fell defines"mature & ready". Most do elbows I would also check the current DNA/genetic testing & what it means in your breed as your dogs parents may have been tested & clear which means some thing may not need to be done but you will need the results from the dogs breeder but again ask them for the correct & current info
RealityBites
Sorry for the late reply, have been in Tassie for a few days! Ok Thanks for that, my female is already Vwd clear, and my boy is either clear or a carrier. I thought you had to see an eye specialist to get the eyes done, anyone know where in Melbourne to go? The place I am using for the vWd testing is called Genetic Technologies in Fitzroy. My male's breeder uses and recommended them. He is nearly two, so would assume he is old enough to get hips and elbows done. Will chat to my vet when I get back about the liver and thyroid. Was under the impression that that is something that has to be done annually? Or more than once at any rate! And can that be done at an earlier age? As for the teeth, I would assume they would be checking for correct amount, and no under/over bite? Which is something a vet can do? As for the cardio tests, will ask the vet about those as well, would assume that would be a specialists job as well? Thanks!
