moggy
Sophie had her op this morning and I picked her up at 3pm. She is in her bed with a laundry basket over her as the vet said to keep her quiet until Sunday. She has had nothing to eat or drink since 7pm last night and I have offered her some water and a morsel of food, but she is not interested. It is 8pm now and I am a little concerned. I hope she does not become dehydrated. Any advice please. Moggy
Animal House
Is Sophie the little one in your picture there? I wouldnt put a laundry basket over her, just keep her in her bed, somewhere warm, I doubt she will want to run around at all, and dont worry about her eating tonight, most dogs dont want to eat the same day, and if they do, they mostly throw it back up. Keeping her quiet means her not running and jumping all over the place. Try a little later with a small bowl of water, I still wouldnt offer her any food tonight. She will be sleepy and groggy and just want to rest. Im sure she will be feeling a lot better tomorrow.
badboyz
Vet's usually instruct no food till the next day, but water available. I would not worry. Even tomorrow she may be slow to eat. I'm sure she will be fine. I think you better post some photos of her in the chi thread.
Garloch
When my girl was desexed, she didn't eat for a day and a half. We love them and are worried when anything goes amiss, naturally. I too, wouldn't keep the washing basket over her, she will soil herself and if she can't get away from it, it could compromise the cleanliness of the wound, and may lead to infection. Give her another 24hours before you panic. A good sleep does wonders for them. And remember, dogs heal SO much more quickly than humans do. Thats why they can walk around the same day as the op!! moggy
I forgot to mention, we have another dog and she keeps wanting to get out of the bed. They usually race round like mad things. We have taken her out a couple of times to see if she wants to go to the toilet and will take her out again before bedtime. Moggy

Garloch
She's a darling little thing. Is she timid? If there is another dog in the house, yes, quite correctly you'll have to seperate them. Think how nervous you are if you are injured and someone touches the sore spot - and we don't have all those teeth! She could freak and bite. I'm assuming here that you don't have all the stuff that breeders have like puppy-pens or trolleys etc. So can the other dog go outside, or could one of them be locked in the bathroom, toilet or laundry? A really big cardboard box, lined with plenty of newspaper that can be changed when she soils it, might be good (until she chews through it that is.) I too have a troupe that run around madly and rumble and play roughly. I had to seperate mine. The only way I could have any peace whilst Zara recouperated. 10 days should have her well fixed up and healed.
WinGus
Pepper didn't eat at all when she got back from being desexed. All she wanted to do was sleep. So we let her! She crawled into her crate, only coming out for a stretch or two, and at which time we'd also take her to the toilet. We were worried that she wouldn't eat or drink, but our vet said that was quite normal. She ate a bit the next day, but was still pretty groggy. I wouldn't worry about it. I think sometimes the anaesthetic works differently on different dogs. If she's still not eating after a couple of days, then take her back to the vet. But for now, best to leave her in a quiet place where she can just get rest.
persephone
Don't worry about the not eating...how many humans do you know who, after a general anaesthetic and a major op, then sit down to a meal? Please don't leave the laundry basket over her...just separate the other dog, or keep one of them on a leash;)
moggy
Sophie update Well she slept in her bed beside our bed last night. The only way we could keep her in was to keep the laundry basket over the top of her bed. I little soft whimpering then she settled down for the night. This morning she ate and drank as if nothing had happened. We are keeping the dogs apart, letting one out each half hour to have a wander round the yard and do what they have to do. All is well so far. Thanks for all your input. Moggy
