I have 2 dogs, a Maltese Pure Bred (Harry) and a Maltese X Bichon Frise (Kayla-Jane) and they will be 6y/o in May. Lately neither dog has been its normal self. Kayla is a very smart dog and she absolutely loves her doggie treats, in fact she expects one everytime she goes outside to do her business. Harry is a very happy go lucky, but not very smart. Lately (last week or so) they have been very lethargic, lying on the couches/ground and sleeping a lot. Last Friday Kayla vomited. Harry threw up on Saturday and again just now. They are not eating anything. Kayla is drinking lots of water. They usually bark at people who walk past our house and they are still doing this while they have been 'off colour.' Kayla has also been shaking uncontrollably in short bursts. Neither have been eating their treats I am a little worried about these things, what could be wrong my my beloved dogs? wylie Posted January 16, 2008 Share Posted January 16, 2008 Take your dogs to a vet. it could be anything and there is not enough information for anyone to be handing out possible causes. baifra Posted January 16, 2008 Share Posted January 16, 2008 Your vet is the only person who can diagnose any possible problem as he/she can closely examine them in person. Harry is already seeing a Vet Specialist Dermatologist, he is taking Cephalexin 300mg as he has been compulsively licking his front feet. I had taken Harry to my normal Vet for over 18 months for treatment and he had given me the same low dose antibiotics and anti fungal tablet for 18 mths of time and it has got worse, so I asked for a referral. Thanks to this Dermatologist Harry's feet and nearly all healed up. However, he still wants to lick, lick, lick. If you put your hand out to stop him going for his feet he then constantly licks your hand til it's soaking. He started by constantly licking my bed sheets and my dogs sleep on my bed at night, when I stopped this he went for his feet. I have rung the Vet Dermatologist who is phoning me back in an hour to discuss Harry's latest vomit to see if I can get in to see him. My dogs are very very fussy eaters, always have been. I have tried all dog food,supermarket fridge food,tinned, dried, Vet Science, dry and wet to no avail. For 5 years I have cooked them chicken thigh fillets with rice and veg, carrot, peas, broccoli, they loved this. I tried mince with rice and veg, no avail. I cooked them chops, and gave them the meat of them which they loved also. They don't like pasta.I also go to the chicken shop and get BBQ chicken for them, no bones of course which they loved, BUT NOW, they don't want any of these foods. I would be sick of it also. I thought maybe a piece of chicken was sus since they are both sick. They are drinking their water fine and still barking at passer by's which is normal for them. They still want to go for a walk in the park and Harry wants to still chase the birds. Anyway, I am waiting for the Vet to phone me back and will let you know the outcome. Any help with food would be much appreciated for the future. My dogs are treated like a King and Queen in this house, they are the most loving, loyal, companions a girl could have. I am a single Mum with an 16 yr old son who adores them also. So this is my beautiful family! Sounds like Harry has an obsessive form of licking anything, (probably OCD, a nervous condition) is he a stressed dog? Also, the diet you are feeding isnt the best. There is no raw food, nothing to clean their teeth on (bones, dry food) etc. They have you wrapped around their paws, and they know it. I agree. You need to decide what you want to feed your dogs (not the other way around) and you also probably need to read about what is healthy food for your dogs, because what you described IS NOT healthy dog food. This forum has a lot of info about what to feed your dogs. ETA I don't think anyone here can give you a diognosis. If you are concerned: go to the vet! They don't have the psychological baggage we have. There is no problem feeding them the same thing all the time (preferably nutritious for dogs). Many dogs eat the same thing day in, day out with no problems or ill effects. Even dry, "boring" (to us) kibble. Healthy dogs do not starve themselves. The specialist hasnt discussed diet issues regarding the dogs condition?? Foods to avoid etc etc. What has the specialist said causes the dogs issues that requires medications?? Dogs that lick there front feet can be due to anal glands being full & many seem to lick there feet as a self soothing thing.habit over many years.Contact with something on the ground(if feet only)& treats that arent for dogs that have food dyes etc overloading a sensitive system & creating discomfort for dogs. The said he wanted to treat with a strong dose of antibiotics first to ease his discomfort, the Vet also did tests for mites but Harry got the all clear. Since Harry has been on the drugs for one month his feet have totally cleared up. We go back to the Vet Specialist next month to check everything again. The Vet did discuss food, but like he said, one thing at a time. If the drugs did not work, then we were going to look at food. Thanks so much for your help.
