bcdogs
Hello everyone. I have a 3 year old border collie and recently got a new BC pup. I have 2 issues. Firstly, the new pup screams when in the car and will not settle.. She is bad when by herself and a little better when the other dog is in the car aswell. I have never had this problem before with any of our dogs, so want to know whats the best way i can address this issue? Secondly, 3 months ago we put our young dog down due to health issues, so this new pup is her replacement. The 3 year old we have has changed a bit since the passing of the other dog, and has come more intolerant and growly. How can we make it easier for her to accept the new pup? We give them equal attention, she still has the same routines and we reward when she is been good, but im just a little concerned! Thanks in advance for your replys. DeltaCharlie
Ahh the border collie screams Your lucky it is only in the car. Both Cody and Delta were the same- cry because they were itchy, cry because they were eating, cry because they felt like crying. It was a constant whingefest for the first few weeks with both of them. As for the car, I used to just ignore it. Cody was the worst, we only ever had to go about 5 mins each weekend to visit my mum but he would scream the whole way there. It sounded like a child screaming and it was deafening. He kept it up until he was about 6 months old. Delta only did it until she was about 4 months but I think thats because she was on longer trips and a few times a week (I took her to agility and obedience for socialisation while I trained Cody) so she got used to it quicker. There is anti-nausea stuff you can give them to see if it helps.
bcdogs
thanks... its a horrible scream isnt it! we are ignoring it, just hoping thats its a phase that will pass soon!! but as we have never had this problem with our other BC's, it just blew us away!! we cannot even have a conversation in the car! hopefully with more and more car trips, she will stop! JulesP
My new pup was the same! She stopped yelling after a couple of trips but she is now throwing up! I tend to let my dogs sort things out for themselves but I know that the bigger dogs are not going to cause any serious damage to puppy. So I guess you need to work out if your older dog is likely to hurt the puppy first.
Her Majesty Dogmad
Make the car really positive - lots of treats and things. Don't necessarily go anywhere. Then try just going round the block and so on. Tehre was something about this on "Its me or the dog" recently but as usual, someone rang me whilst she was explaining what to do and I missed it! bcdogs
Haha.. thanks for your replys.. We are just going on alot of short trips in the car now, to try and get her used to it. hopefully she will settle soon.. but i will defiently try that reward idea and not driving. thankyou as for the older dog.. hopefully they will just sort it out in time.. the older one will give a bit of a nip if the pup is out of line, but i cant imagine her seriously hurting her. hopefully this week while we are at work and they are home alone for awhile, they will sort it out! JulesP
The thing on Its Me or the Dog was more about dogs that bark at things outside. When they are quiet you give them a treat. I wouldn't advise it for this situation as it is an attention getting thing. Like if they cry whilst in their crates. Get some ear plugs and ignore her! Guest Tess32
I also recently got a collie pup (rough collie though, not a BC) and he was also a HUGE screamer. He screamed the first two nights in his crate and I thought it would never end. It DOES though. I'd watch carefully with your adults. I can trust my bitch with him, no worries at all there, but I would never leave him unsupervised with my dog.
