laffi
Since we talk about grain free dry foods, does any one know when is Orijen coming to Australia? When I emailed them they said: some time this year (2008)...
jaegertheweim
I just looked on the website and it said the protein content for the large breed puppy was 42%.. is this right? It sounds really really high (EP has just 23% and others I've looked at have about 27-28%)

The Orijen formulations are designed as Nature intended - food that the puppy or it's mother would naturally select if it had the choice. Protein builds muscle and is essential for healthy all-round development, but does not by itself accelerate growth. The major growth factors are - the genetic code, growth hormone, and bone minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. I actually did some research about it and there is no conclusive scientific data indicating that high protein content accelerates growth.

It sounds really really high (EP has just 23% and others I've looked at have about 27-28%) I would question that amount of protein in a large breed pup food. I had to change my bloodhound from Pro Plan Puppy for large breeds (34% protein I think from memory) to Eagle Pack Puppy for large breeds (23% protein) as she was getting flat in the feet. Within a week of the change her feet had come back nicely. Leanne
oonga
so the high protein level is only an issue while they are growing is that right? Edited January 11, 2008 by oonga

Within a week of the change her feet had come back nicely. When we had our first Saints our male was not gaining weight as would normally expected, was down in the pasterns too. We were advised to feed larger food i.e. not cut up their meat too small make them work for their tucker and also feed them up off the ground. We did this and noticed within a week weight gain and came up in the pasterns. Never heard of it being caused by protein level but I don't profess to know everything, it may well be. cazxxz
It does sound like a lot of protein. I hope that owners give their dogs' kidneys a break every now and then, by fasting perhaps. Edited January 13, 2008 by cazxxz
