It started with two on his chest last night and within and hourthey were all over his underbelly and behind. No vet were open at this time so I just gave him an iodine bath and put some aloe on them. This moring they are much worse and seem itchier for him. Obviously it's an alergic reaction to something as otherwise he is perfectly fine. Is there something I can put on them to make it go down or do I need to go to the vet for a anti-histamine? shellbyville Posted January 9, 2008 Share Posted January 9, 2008 I would go to the vets and get an antihistamine. I have had hives myself and it was the most uncomfortable, awful thing to have. We also had a dog have an allergive reaction to something, we never found out what it was, but assumed it was an insect bite, as most of her swelling was on her muzzle. We got antihistamines and it went down in a very short time and she was comfortable and happy in a short time as well. Hives are not nice and are very, very itchy. I would be off to the vets. SoL Posted January 9, 2008 Share Posted January 9, 2008 Sounds like he really does need an antihistamine. Phenergan is good and we have used one tablet on Chester when he was having quite a bad reaction to something. Obviously that is an emergency measure and I would recommend an injection from the vet as the first course of action. However, it is always good to have some tablets on hand, just in case. I am at work at the moment had to come in early for a container but will take him as soon as I can - my sister is home with him keeping an eye on him. The vet said he has swelling down his ear canal and a bit of a high temp. His reaction is also getting worse not better, when I went to pick him up his face had swollen up and it looked like he had a golf ball shoved in side his lip! Oh poor old thing! Dolly got covered in hives about 3 months ago, yuck, she was pretty disfigured. I gave her half a clarytine (sp) tablet and doused her body with ACV, which seemed to take the itch out of the hives till the antihistamine kicked in. The antihystomines will reduce the body's hystomines from attacking the allergen. The Ireemine, may be an anti-inflammitory... You should see drastic relief fairly soon... It may take a couple of more days for all the swelling to completely come down. I am highly allergic to shellfish....The other week I ate something containing crab without knowing it. I had to have a shot of adrellaline.. A shot of Anti-hystomine and a shot of quartisone.... Plus I was given a step down dose of steriod..for three days... Took two days for the swelling in my throat to completely come down.. Took about the same as long as that for the paid in my chest to ease. And took about a week to fully get over the whole thing. I now carry an Epi-pen..... But hate to say it.... Coming down of Adrellleline and steriods.. WOW.... not an experience I want to live again too soon.
