Can Dogs Get Tinea?

Just asking the question makes it sound like I'm worried about it but honestly - I'm just curious

With all the talk of allergies, red legs thread and the thousand on "itchy dog", "saliva stains" etc I did have a thought that paw licking and chewing could simply be itchy feet. What causes itchy feet - well, tinea does amongst other things

Yes, yes, could be anything including allergy or anxiety etc etc

But, particularly to the vets out there -

Can dogs get tinea?

Technically yes :o

Tinea is region specific name for a fungal infection of the skin, often with one of the organisms that causes ringworm. Dogs (and cats / horses / cattle etc) can certainly have ringworm (dermatophytes like Trichyphyton and Microsporum spp) infections, some of the organisms are common between people and animals and some affect particular species.

However, the organism most commonly associated with itchy feet and as a secondary infection with allergies is Malassezia pachydermatis, which is a fungus that behaves like a yeast (so usually just referred to as a yeast infection).

So yes, they can get "tinea" as ringworm, but it's not associated with itchy feet.

Our GSD has particularly smelly feet. Our vet suggested it was similar to tinea. They suggested we soak his feet in a solution of Malaseb for about 10 minutes but we found getting him to sit still for even 5 minutes was imposible. We ended up wetting his feet and then rolling him on his back and rubbing the malaseb directly into his feet. After 5 to 10 minutes of that we just rinsed his feet. It only too 2 or 3 applications to notice a big improvement.

Forge had a discoloured nail, which the vet said was a fungal infection, like tinea and suggested the stuff you would treat your own foot with from the chemist. We were at the pharmacy and the lady asked us some question, we said 'dunno, our vet said to get it or the dog' she said "oh, that's so sweet!"... I don't know what was sweet about it, but she thought so.
