Perry's Mum
The next Koolie Club Sheepdog School will be on 2/3 February at Binalong, near Yass. The school will be held on a very large working property with thousands of fresh sheep, lots of different size yards, large woolsheds to work in if it is very hot or raining (we should be so lucky). The teacher will be Brad Pellow who manages the property and is a successful trialler. While preference is given to Koolies, other working breeds such as kelpies, border collies, etc. are welcome. Beginners are welcome. Cost will be $130 for the weekend or $120 for Koolie Club Members (you an join the Koolie Club even if you don't have a Koolie). PM me for details and a booking form. Perry's Mum
What about a White Shepherd? sorry, the teacher does not feel confident about teaching shepherds because they work differently and he wants to keep the school to traditional herding dogs he is familiar with. That's a shame my breed is excluded as the German Shepherd was bred as a Sheep herding dog. My girls sister got her HI last year, would of been nice to get involved too. Perry's Mum
I am sure there are herding classes in Sydney where you could take him. I know there are classes at Erskine Park and I think also at Richmond. It would be a lot closer to home as well. Robert Cox also runs schools at Camden and he will teach any breed. MrsD
Colin Webster takes any breed of working dog in his seminars & classes, contact someone from Erskin Park & they should be able to let you know when his next training day is. ETA - I dont think it's a matter of being excluded from herding itself, the trainer just obviously isn't comfortable with training a breed of dog that he's not familiar with. Right or wrong, breeds like BC's koolies & kelpies work in a completely different way to a breed like a shepherd & the guy just obviously doesnt train upright breeds . There was a white shepherd doing HIC (?) at Uralla recently, lovely dog with plenty of promise . Hope yours does just as well when you get to work with him . Janba
Colin Webster takes any breed of working dog in his seminars & classes, contact someone from Erskin Park & they should be able to let you know when his next training day is. We have no sheep at Erskine Park till the 8/3 (a week before our first trials). The Sporting Committee is takng over all Saturday training so no more BC training days which is where Colin instructs. I don't know if he will be instructing at any of the Sporting Committee days, but he is conducting training for the BC club once a month at his place till we get new sheep. Yep, ages ago & yes it was both Schatzi & Ebony that won the awards both days - still don't think Dagboy believes it that she won something, let alone for herding .
