Cadbury Chocolate

 Share

Recommended Posts

Last night I was cleaning up around the home and eventually got to the living room and found the chocolate wrapper on the ground with no chocolate to be seen anywhere...

It was soon evident that Fraser (our chocolate labrador - how ironic!) had eaten half a block of chocolate (probably around 125 grams). I was reading on the General Health Information thread about the dangers of chocolate and that it is toxic to dogs.

Will this amount of chocolate be of any harm to him? He is currently around 30kgs and is just over 7 months of age. Any replies would be helpful, he was given his dinner shortly after eating the chocolate so I hope that some of his dinner (kibble and wet food) was able to absorb some of the chocolate.

Im pretty sure it takes about a kilo to kill a large dog but I could be wrong. He is only a pup though so not sure.

How long ago would he have eaten it? I imagine if it was going to make him sick it would do it before long.

If I were you I would call the vet and ask them about it. Mine is good at answering all my questions in regards to stupid things the dogs have eaten (eg. permanent markers).

Edited to ask: Was it dark, normal, or white chocolate? Dark is the worst as it has the most cocoa, while white isnt going to hurt him (although it still isnt healthy)

Hi Sticks. I did the conversion from the post you referred to

1 oz = 28 gms

1 oz to 1.5 kgs is toxic

Your dog is 30 kgs so divide 30 by 1.5 = 20

20 times 28 gms = 560 gms to cause pancreas problems acording to the pinned topic.

Hope this helps and I hope Frazer is fine. I would take him to the vet to make sure.

It was normal chocolate, luckily I had eaten just more than half of it so he didn't get his paws on the entire block... I just gave one of the local vets a call and they seemed to think 125g of chocolate for a 30kg Labrador was not too dangerous, I will have to keep my eye on him though...

Hi Sticks,

My gutsache westie boy with the gourmet tastes ate 300g of Paddington Liquor Choclates on the Saturday before Christmas (intended for the people I was having lunch and dinner with!)  (They got Cadbury instead!)

Anyway rang the vet who said that in a 8-9kg dog this wasn't a toxic dose - but if I didn't want a dog with the runs for a day or two it was probably a good idea to make him sick with a strong brew of salty water - so I wacked a pile of salt in warm water (enough to make it quite cloudy) and put a couple of syringes down his throat (he was not impressed!). Over an hour later he was sick all over his new cushion in his new clam shell bed! (What a day it was!)

He was a bit quiet for a day - seemed to have a slightly sore tummy but after that he was as right as rain.

Given your lab is 30 kgs I doubt if 125g will even register with him or even give him a sore tummy - and if he seems OK I'm not sure I would even bother making him sick - just make sure he spends some time outside!!

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Westiemum :D

My 20kg sheltie ate 85gms of chocolate fudge with hazelnuts last year (plastic wrapper, sticker and all!) - I phoned the vet in a panic, and they didn't seem to think it would be enough to cause any problems - but told me to keep a close eye on him...no problems thankfully!

Given your boy weighs more, I would think that 125gm of milk chocolate wouldn't do him any harm.

Signs to watch for are if your dog becomes overly excited/hyperactive, unusually thirsty/pees a lot, vomiting and diarrhoea. Keep him quiet as exercise can increase their heart beat (which with chocolate toxicity is already beating faster)...so you don't want to make it any worse!

Vinnie and Cooper ate a bag of bullets last year and were fine. I was expecting the runs especially from the licorice, but nothing, right as rain !!!!

They have to devour a fair bit for it to be toxic, in saying that, dont make it common practise to feed pieces of choc here and there.

Leila has consumed 3 blocks of family sized chocolate in the last 12 months and if anything had a runny bum for a day....she is a nutcase and can get to high shelves to get to chocolate if she smells it, so now it goes in the Fridge.

From my understanding, Dark chocolate is really bad, larger dogs cope better with chocolate.

I'd probably watch your dog and if you're concerned head to the Vet.

Kirri the Crestie (5.5kg) ate 180g of chocolate one day. I'd only just had a row and left it on the coffee table. I found the wrapper and thought it was a labrador but then Kirri vomited a whole lotta chocolate!! The vet said to keep an eye on her - seizures etc but she was fine. Little piglet ;)

I am much more careful with my chocolate these days. Can't be wasting it on the dogs!
