whitka
Was just wondering if tomatoes are bad for dogs, my boy Toby really likes them and is stealing them from our garden. Thanks
Mizzi
I grew cherry tomatoes last year and, when I was picking them, I would throw any with split skins to Calypso - he loved them. However, I stopped feeding them to him when I noticed he was getting really proppy on his bad leg. I thought the acidity might have been aggravating his arthritis. Still not sure it was the tomatoes, but he certainly improved after I stopped giving them to him.
Jed
Yes they are. The odd one wont hurt, I don't suppose.

whitka
We have only started growing them and we gave one to Toby to see if he liked them. He seems to really enjoy them and now he sometimes helps himself to the ones in the garden
Golden Rules
There's a pinned thread at the top of this forum about particular foods dogs shouldn't eat and tomatoes is on the list.......however I do give my boys the tomatoes that go soft and one really likes them. As Jed said, the odd one won't hurt.
wildairbc
Cripes, my dogs LOVE tomatoes and eat them like candy! Even the baby pups, when out to play, will find the tomato plants and start pulling them off. I have never seen any bad reaction. Know lots of other dogs, too, that love tomatoes. I belive that the stem and leaves may not be too great for them, but they don't seem interested in that part, anyway! They even eat green tomatoes. In fact, if I want any produce for myself, I have to fence it in!
koolietas
I've been told that they are bad for dogs - but have never been able to find anything on the net about the fruit being bad...but you will find that the plants themselves are.
luvabull
I've heard that they are ok for dogs but not for older dogs with arthritis or problem joints  Same with humans with arthritis :D ETA: You can google "tomatoes and arthritis" for info Edited January 2, 2008 by luvabull
