mattyandnat1
Hi im new to this so here goes... hope someone can help My 14 month old male whippet 'wippa' has generalized demodectic mange.. He was first diagnosed in march last year when he was only 4 months old. The vet put him on sheep ivermectin which kind of helped then we moved to a new suburb and got a new vet.. He is now on cattle ivomec which is alot better cos of the diff formulas he only needs .8ml instead of the 5.7ml he was having on the sheep ivomec.. We saw great results after the swap but now it seems like he is going backwards and is getting worse. I'm hoping someone can help me with his diet.. ive read that diet can make a huge difference to there immune system.. He currently is on advance dry food and is fed chicken wings and necks every night with lamb shanks regularly. We also give him sardines a few times a week and pasta and vegies !!! Would holistic food be better for him? and is there any vitamins i could give him?? or any other treatments anyone knows of? does advocate actually help to fix it or is it just a claim? He's a beautiful natured boy and it breaking my heart seeing him this way ill do anything to get him better .. Ive recently purchased 2 new whippet pups off a different reputable breeder is there anyway they could catch this because they're only 8 weeks old? I had previously contacted the breeder we got wippa from and they didn't want anything to do with it .. disappointing considering i just wanted to know how they treated the mother if she had it... ( the vet told me thats the most likely cause) any help would be grateful Edited December 30, 2007 by mattyandnat1
Nekhbet
Grab Advocate and start using that as well. It kills both types of mites, fleas, worms and heartworm as well as ear mites. (from vets/pet stores) WHat type of dry food are you using?

sheree_e4
Is your boy desexed? If not desexing will help alot,I personally would not use a dog that has demodectic mange in a breeding program. eta - we have had great results with changing foods to hills z/d, Also bath him in pyohex shampoo leave in for 10 mins and wash off, then apply pyohex leave in conditioner.do this weekly. Cavandra
If the dog is not yet desexed, this needs to be done, as hormone fluctuations will set it off due to being a more stressful time. Stress triggers it in many cases. Adult dogs suffering with it can not be bred from anyway. All dogs have mites, and they are transferred to the babies in the first day or so from the mother, it is then stress, or compromised immune systems that will trigger the symptoms. But mostly there are not any symptoms in a healthy dog. Your other dogs will not contract this type of mites from this dog. To boost the immune system removing all preservatives & colours from the diet. A BARF diet would be the best idea IMO. You can put apple cider vinegar in all water bowls all the time (a splash), and feed Kelp every other day (if not daily)......Kelp stimulates the immune system..Honey is a natural antibiotic & overall tonic. I would never vaccinate this dog either, I would always do a Titer test & only do vaccinations as they are required. Perhaps trying a Homeopath like Jackie Fitzgerald (google her website, she does long distance/phone consults) may be a better approach since general treatments are not making headway. All dogs are different & what works for one may not for another. This is one of her treatments for mange I just found in a book. Feed whole minced garlic & make a lotion of garlic too. Mince 30 -40 cloves of garlic & place in a gallon container, pour boiling spring water over the garlic & keep the container covered to prevent evaporation. Once it is cooled you apply this to the dog on a daily basis until cleared up.
mattyandnat1
Thanks for all the info cavandra i found a BARF stockist near me which is great from what ive read ill put my pups on it too . And ill buy some garlic cloves and apple cider vinegar... Ill speak to my vet too about the titer test and get it done asap i never thought his vaccination's could affect it but from what ive been researching it might not of helped his case! His due for his annual vac in a few weeks so ill be testing him first... hope it all helps

Once it is cooled you apply this to the dog on a daily basis until cleared up. That's interesting. Juliette de Bairacli Levy who mentions four different external treatments for all types of mange, also has a garlic treatment: Slice up three whole roots of garlic, consisting of about 20 cloves and add to this two handfuls of finely chopped elder leaves and stalks. Place all in a pan with one quart of cold water, bring to a boil and simmer slowly for half an hour. Keep covered throughout. Do not strain. Allow to brew, covered, for at least seven hours. The lotion is then ready for use. Soak large pieces of cotton in the brew and friction the entire body very well. This was to be applied once a week after bathing in both soap flakes and an olive-oil soap. Also Two to three tablespoons of the brew to be given internally early morning and at night. Please note I am not recommending this - I would worry a bit about the "friction" part at the very least I am sure. I just thought it was interesting. Most dogs love garlic I don't think it would do any harm to give him a bit of minced garlic in his food. I would heartily second Cavandra's comments generally re boosting the immune system by attention to diet. Iodine via kelp or seaweed plus unfiltered whole apple Apple Cider Vinegar (I would give with meal 2.5 ml daily for a 10kg dog JMO). Personally, as well as attention to diet as above I would continue with the treatments prescribed by your vet. Once you had two in a row scrapings clear of mites, then I would probably give the Ivermectin and pyohex the heave ho and stick with the diet changes and Advocate. That is just my opinion, no doubt others may differ, it is up to you to choose what suits you and your dog best. Keep trying stuff until you find what works for you is my best advice. stormie
Have you tried using a Demodex Rinse? Have seen great results with that... You can wash in Pyohex first, and then use the demodex rinse after.
Staffyluv
Send a PM to Staffy Rescue, they have rescued and cured a couple of staffords with it and I can't remember what they did. All the best Jodie
